116. I think I'm at best a non-degree student
I think I certainly know more than the average person, but know a lot more , as far as obscure stuff goes, about 60's soul and rock/pop (i.e. not late 60's "classic rock" as much as great mid 60's one hit wonders etc). But I do love rockabilly, and think I sing it pretty well, and miss doing it. I have a decent live in the studio (all first takes too, so any goof ups are left in) CD of 5 songs with my last rockabilly band( about 10 years ago) : Eddie Bond's Flip Flop Mama,Bob Luman's Let's Fall in Love, the Blasters' version of The Hollywood Flames' Buzz Buzz Buzz, Bill Haley's Train of Sin, and Chuck Berry's Promised Land. Our bass player was the real, totally immersed and knowledgeable rockabilly fanatic, and he brought in much (not all though) of the material including Pink and Black. I learned a lot about the more obscure stuff from him. One I've been unsuccessfully looking for on you tube that I LOVED to sing was Something to Remember You By, (by Bill Allen, I think?).

Hey Dystopian--didn't mean to start up a private side conversation on your thread, but you know what a music fanatic I am, as you are too, so I know you forgive me and the Midway Rebel ( and you know also that I'm flattered that you liked that little 5 song rockabilly CD that I referred to here)

If you were in the Chicago rockabilly scene I bet we know some of the same folks.

114. Jeff Beck is a monster of a talent on guitar.
He is incredibly good. I'm not a huge fan of his solo work though. The only recording of his I own is "Crazy Legs", his tribute to Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps. Check out this recording with Jeff Beck and Darrel Higham. Darrel is an no slouch on guitar either. He has the rhythm guitar/vocal role here though and Beck plays lead. On the "Crazy Legs" recordings Beck copies the original leads note for blinding speed note. He also plays the exact same type of '55 Gretsch Duo Jet that Cliff Gallup played with the Blue Caps.

Cliff finger picked and Beck is typically a flat picker. I read that Beck had to study to learn the style. I'd say he done a good job.

His writing is the best, his singing style is unique. Carl Perkins is still a much better picker than either Elvis.

Edited on Sat Sep-18-10 12:26 AM by The Midway Rebel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akXU5n6AR1I&feature=related

See that picture? THAT is Ersel Hickey. That is an iconic image in some subcultures. I know guys that have that image tattooed on their bodies. One fella I know with such a tattoo had Ersel autogragh below it and then ran to a tattoo artist to have the autogragh made permanent.

I actually met Ersel once too. It was at a diner in Green Bay. A friend and I had been up all night partying and he was up early having breakfast. Nice guy.

He passed away a few years back from kidney cancer.

edit: this post is in the wrong place, but I'm gonna just leave it here.

Beach Boys covered this tune too. I had no idea.

107. Chris Isaak -- Big Blue Spanish Sky
Nothing says it like the key of A minor. Every guitar player should learn to play a ballad like this. Good luck singing like Chris though.

I love his work.

115. "Good luck singing like Chris"...No shit...he's incredible
seen him twice...First was 1991 and then again, last (2009) summer at a beautiful outdoor venue just north of Albuquerque ( where I most recently saw Los Lobos with John Hiatt )....that first time, when it was time for the trumpet solo, he instead had a saxophone start playing from offstage, who then walked onto the stage while still playing . It was Johnny Reno, who then stayed, and played the rest of the concert with Isaak's band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyI4wG9JdYg

Well brunettes are fine man
And blondes are fun
But when it comes to getting a dirty job done

I'll take a red headed woman
A red headed woman
It takes a red headed woman
To get a dirty job done

Well listen up stud
Your life's been wasted
Til you've got down on your knees and tasted

A red headed woman
A red headed woman
It takes a red headed woman
To get a dirty job done

Tight skirt, strawberry hair
Tell me what you've got, baby, waiting under there
Big green eyes that look like, son
They can see every cheap thing that you ever done

Well I don't know how many girls you've dated, man
But you ain't lived til you've had your tires rotated

By a red headed woman
A red headed woman
It takes a red headed woman
To get a dirty job done

I cannot begin convery the sheer joy of attending or playing/jamming at shows like the second video. This band is a bunch of Swedes. The guitar player, in fact most the band, don't speak a lick of English. The lead guitarist is one of my favorite players. His name is JJ Jyriki. Thats Wildfire Willie on rhythm guitar. Look around for some good videos of him. Gawd them Swedes can drink.

We lost Billy just last year.

I saw them twice in 11 months, and they played again just 8 months after that (I didn't go to that one...had Melvins tickets already). I've heard both Boris and Melt Banana say that they do real well here in the States, and don't do so well back home in Japan, so they're here a lot. Lucky us! :)

177. there's quite a bit of amazing acts that languish in Japan, Korea, etc.
i've been dying to see X Japan, and the one chance i had in S. Korea they had to cancel. now that is something i am sad about. they are a lot harder to get where i live in USA.

seen Boris around 3+ times, but they are amazing every time. one of the few acts that i actively want to see repeats of, so i was sad i missed this year's new material live. though i am sure they will be back. if they ended up on Adult Swim's metal album, i'm sure they are doing very well indeed! never would have believed it several years ago.

171. Two from X: "Blue Spark" and "I See Red"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SX8LQBPeEus
"Blue Spark".....X

Lyrics only..."I See Red"....X

She wore blue her bad luck blue shoes he wore green for go they went out any way
she and their car wore black throughout the red light "stop i forgot all my memories"
i see red when i see you fan belts break at 3 am i get mad drinks get spilled at 5 past 2 i don't feel sad but then i see you... and i see red
i can't look down or i might fall on you i might follow in your footsteps i see a showdown at sundown what's the lowdown?
i had to hunt you up i see red...he sees the sun come up and she needs rest
here it comes a creepin so close to the bed "good morning darkness i see your shining face" she's always thinking about the facts of life
i see red when i see you fan belts break at 3am i get mad drinks get spilled at 5 past 2 i don't feel sad but then i see you... and i see red..
