Best way to handle very loud upstairs neighbors - Suggestions please
Hi all,

We have a new neighbor living upstairs. Our building is very old and is well insulated so in ten years have only had minimal disturbance. The new neighbors sounds as if they are elephants walking around. In addition to loud music and last night for a bit sounded as if 10 people were jumping up and down. Seriously. What is the best way to handle this if it continues.

Should I call security?
Should we write a note?
Should we knock on their door?

I get offended being in this situation because we are very careful not to disturb anyone and I feel like they are just being so selfish. Please help.

2. If you think talking to them is pointless, check your lease or bylaws.
You're entitled to peace and repose. Have the landlord or association enforce it.

(P.S., objectively, they are selfish. If you hear it, they hear it but don't give a shit.)

7. "Right to quiet enjoyment"
...that's the legalese. Find that in the lease and quote it verbatim to the property owners.

I had a landlord evict me because the woman next door had earthshaker speakers and played this Euro Disco crap at full rumble volume daily. This was a townhome, the walls were THICK, but it shook the whole place.

She complained about me to the homeowners association, they complained to my landlord.

HER landlord (she was a renter too) came by, unannounced, and asked me about the situation. I told him, he gave me his number, told me to call him if it happened again.

It happened again, I called, HE complained about me to the homeowners association, THEY told my landlord.

Ultimately she gave me 30 days to get out, because she ultimately wanted to move back into the place, and didn't want to be surrounded by "upset" neighbors.

My attorney told me that it wasn't a battle worth fighting at the time as I had bigger battles going on.

So sometimes the answer to noisy neighbors is "put up with it or move," because the people you THINK are there to do the "right thing" will gut you like a fish, without a trace of remorse, because they see you as a "troublemaker."

3. It's always best to take
the direct approach first. Talk to them face to face, be nice like: "I'm not sure if you are aware of this or not, but we thought we'd let you know." If you do that then you have a chance that you can be good neighbors. Going to someone of authority to handle it or just writing a note could very well start a pissing match that never ends.

Give them the chance to correct the problem themselves first.

4. Rig up a huge pair of cones from the ceiling to your stereo speakers and then...
"21st Century Schizoid Man" on repeat - oh, and at 3:00 am.

Then be sure to deny it.

8. Have you tried "talking to them"?
I believe that any sort of resolution of these sorts of issues which does not involve "attempt at personal communication" as a first step prior to calling an authority figure in for mediation/arbitration represents a lacking in one's own socialization.
