anyone want to be my personal trainer?
I worked out today for the first time since December or January. I've noticed over the past couple of weeks that I'm starting to get a beer gut. I suppose I could just cut out the beer, but I'd rather get into shape.

Today, I ran 25 minutes and lifted for about 15. My goal is to exercise 4-5 times/week, stay in my current dress size, but be a bit more toned. Anyone else out there trying to get motivated that wants to be cyber workout buddies? I'm thinking we could PM each other and remind each other to get off our butts, as well as discuss progress. Could be inspirational, I suppose.

1. I could have Skittles threaten to kick your ass.
I started putting weight back on too, even though I am working out. I guess I *can't* eat whatever I want and maintain my weight.

Sooooo...I am working out a little harder, eating a little less. I sometimes need help in not being lazy, so I'd be your buddy. :-)

Maybe we can get a whole group of buddies going.

2. is that weight 'gain'
according to the scale? because if it is, muscle weighs more than fat. so if you're working out you may gaining muscle weight but not 'fat' weight.

i'd be a workout buddy.

3. a group would be good!
Getting older sucks. I hate amorphous blobs on my once-svelte bod.

After we work out, we can all go have a beer or two, right?

5. Getting older DOES suck, although...
...I've never had a svelte bod. I used to be one gigantic amorphous blob, but I'm better now.

One night a week, after a cardio workout, I have a 20 oz. beer.

7. I would love to.
I had been doing really well working out until my sister-in-law went back in the hospital. I have really gotten away from my workouts over the last 6-8 weeks. It is time for me to get back on track. So let me know.

8. Drop and give me 20 !
Edited on Thu Aug-14-03 02:13 PM by underpants
Now roll over and do 20 situps!

repeat as necessary.

Arms every other day, abs can be done daily.

On the running thing-after you finish stretching balance on each foot for ten seconds. add ten seconds every week until you get to 30 seconds. You won't believe how it will improve your running.

10. Okay, I'm in.
But I can't be bothered to lift because it's too boring.

I usually run about 30 miles a week, which I'm pretty faithful about, plus wildly sporadic episodes of swimming, biking, or golf.

I don't need to lose any weight but a little help with motivation to stay on track will be most helpful. Great idea!

Edit - that is a good site. Good information.

:wtf: Maybe if I trained HARD!!!

I try to stay under 500 at breakfast, 1000 at dinner, and eat a normal lunch. That helped me drop 70lbs.

16. My doc says that if you eat just 100 calories less per day...
And that's not much -- it results in about a one-pound loss per month.

Dieting alone isn't adequate, though -- exercise is a must, otherwise your weight goes up and down. Actually, the more you exercise, the less grub you feel like pounding down.

The more you eat, the more you want to. But, you actually want to eat healthy foods. So yeah, less skittles (no offense, hon!), more veggies and turkey.

I've lost 22 lbs, but need to lose 20 more. I can't seem to get off my lazy ass and go to the gym-and I'm unemployed! My SO doesn't go to the gym-he golfs to stay in shape. I'd love a cyber workout buddy!

20. I also put on weight this summer
I've shed most of it working out but it is taking longer than I ever remember it taking before. I work out 5 times a week, some days just cardio, but I do some toning and lifting at home if I don't have time to do it at the gym. The eliptical cross trainer seems to burn the most calories for the time I spend on it. A 45-minute workout on aerobic setting at medium intensity burns about 650 calories.

I've also been doing "boot camp for abs" although I've never gotten through it as written here:

Lay on your back on the floor,
do 30 flutter kicks
then do 30 scissors
then 30 leg raises

all without letting your heels touch the floor

OK, I'm lucky if I can do 12-15 of each and by the time I start the leg raises I'm whimpering in pain, but it's working.

22. They don't call it boot camp for nothin'
When I start doing that workout I try to imagine some burly drill sergeant screaming insults in my face. It keeps me going after the burn sets in.

OH, another good ab exercise is get in the plank position and lift your legs backwards for 10 reps and then switch legs. Even just two sets gets results. It seems to work better than crunches at least for me but then again I just hate doing crunches.

24. I suggest we move this thread to the Meeting Room and touch bases
daily to see who keeps their commitments. I am doing 45 min. of cardio/walking on treadmill or outside six day a week since February. Have dropped some weight but lately I'm backsliding. I'm doing my walking later and later each night--last night and night before I just beat the clock starting the walk at 11 p.m. to meet my goal.

I need more discipline and less procrastination (staying off DU and the web for a while would help). The worst part of it is putting in the time, and oh yeah, my hair always gets ruined from sweating.

But still, I'd like to be part of a cybergroup that keeps in touch regarding fitness.

25. good idea about moving this to MR
The lounge is so busy... and there are so many captivating threads about yaks, flatulence, and other goodies so it's easy to just sit and read rather than get up and do something!

I'll post something over there, and anyone who's interested head on over!

34. All they do
is raise your heart rate for a brief period. Without proper diet and exercise they wouldnt do a thing. I never advise anyone to use them, unless they want a wake-me-up in the morning (which a strong cup of coffee could do).

36. here's a ? for you!
I want to get some definition... arms, abs, butt, shoulders primarily. My 10-year college reunion is coming up in just over 2 months. What's the best way to get the quickest results? Pylometrics? Interval training? Regular cardio mixed with weights? And, if I have, say, 1 hour 5x/week, how much of that time should I devote to cardio and how much weights?

TIA!

37. I just saw this
Im a firm believer that weights and cardio are the most effective way to reach fitness goals. I dont know if you are male or female but I dont think it matters as both sexes basically have the same bodies apart from the reproductive organs.

Day 1: 30 mins cardio 30 mins weights/back
Day 2: 30 mins cardio 30 mins weights/shoulders
Day 3: no cardio 45-60 mins weights working legs
Day 4: 30 mins cardio 30 mins weights/chest
Day 5: 30 mins cardio 30 mins weights/arms

39. It depends....
on what time of the day you are training. If you train first thing in the morning before breakfast I would say cardio first, drink a shake or eat a very quick meal and then lift weights. I think its a bad idea to lift on an empty stomach. If you train later in the day then weights first and cardio last.
