Me - I'm a sucker for the classics
seven samurai - though I enjoyed Ran very, very much

1. Yojimbo is my favorite.

But I have enjoyed just about every Kurosawa movie I've ever seen.

Dreams was quite strange in spots, but overall I enjoyed it. Samurai, Yojimbo, Ran and Rashomon are just freaking classics!

5. 'Ran' is generally acknowledged to be his masterpiece

Most Americans are far more familiar with "(The Magnificent) Seven Samurai" .... but I personally go with the 'experts' on this one. "Ran" is awesome.

He literally paints the screen in his battles. They are explosions of color and currents. The movie never fails to awe.

3. Ikiru and "No Regrets for Our Youth"

Ikiru --"To Live"-- perhaps one of his lesser known films. "No Regrets for Our Youth"--a pacifist, feminist film.

Best Foreign Film Oscar in 1975

10. I'd put "Rashomon" a close second on my list.

I think Seven Samurai would be third if only due to an original plot line and the unusual treatment of the theme of redemption.

Next to Ran it's my favorite color Japanese movie (live action, that is)

13. I picked Sanjuro

it's a little more lighthearted than Yojimo and I like the way he angrily mentors the young samurai. I also love the "fountain of blood" ending.

However, I would have chosen "Drunken Angel" if it was offered. That's my favorite Kurosawa film, and the one that introduced Toshiro Mifune to the world.
