I saw "Hereafter" in the theatre tonight , in fact just came back . I witnessed a Masterpiece , a swan song from Mr. Eastwood . There is more than meets the eye here in this exquisitely painted narration, this is no movie about Psychics or love , or even loss . This is about Alienation and living with it .
I am sure Mr. Eastwood identifies with Dickens a lot , having the protagonist be a Dickens fan is no accident in my opinion. Sure other directors might be the "Shakespeares" , "Dostoevskys'" of the Art of Film , ever so inflamed with transcendence in search of meaning , sanity or purpose. My Clint is like Dickens simply an observer that happens to be a little sensitive boy at heart who takes in the frames of life with bewilderment , delight and kind of a sweet bitter sorrow that only makes everything much more precious . He takes all that and finely like an artisan with his or her long delicate hands lays it out for all of us to see , looks at us with his puppy eyes and says :"See how wonderful this is , how beautiful? , don't you see , no need for transcendence , we , all of us transcend every day".
This project might have been brought about by Eastwood's thoughst about his mortality , true , but the way it transformed passing through his "soul" (of sorts) is achingly beautiful . This is a labour of love , and I have a feeling this will go over most of peoples heads and it will fail commercially.
Thank you Mr. Eastwood. God my hands are still shaking as I type this . Highly recommended.
Goodnight.
