Any advice as to which company is cheapest for auto insurance for a 19 year old girl?
If there is such a thing. This is basically for liability on a 2001 PT Cruiser. I've checked Geiko and Progressive and they come in at around $80 a month with comprehensive, $10 less without it. I kind of think that's about a good as it might be.

1. It really depends upon where she lives, too.
Our daughter was just in an accident this week (she just turned 19) and was hit from behind. The guy who hit her was uninsured so we're out a $250 deductible. :(

2. I worked in that crap for a bit since my dad was an actuary
If I recall, running the rating program on a person that age would normally quote Progressive. They always seemed to come up with the best rate.

We worked with just about all the crooks on the block. Depending on quite a few circumstances, the best bet is to try them.

3. Yikes. That's what we pay for comp/collision on 2 newer cars (one a sportscar)
I drive a 2008 2 seater; my husband a 2006 luxury SUV. We have comprehensive/collision with a tiny deductible (250 I think) that costs about that much for both cars together. We're with 21st and have been forever.

4. That's the price paid for being that young.
The only thing that would be worse in her situation if she was a guy.

Some 38 years ago when I was 20 and had a couple of speeding tickets I could have sworn I was pay $50/month for the barest of auto liability insurance, but when I checked the inflation conversion that came out to be nearly $270 in today's dollar, so I don't think that could be right.

Auto insurance is still very expensive for young drivers though.

5. car insurance is always...
car insurance is always expensive for kids. Never trust teens.

You could get a lower model car and then install a bigger engine to skimp on some insurance fees.

6. Getting cheap insurance is almost always a terrible idea
I'm a personal injury lawyer. I deal with this every day. In Illinois (where I live) there is mandatory insurance with 20k minimum. You also have a right to get underinsured coverage and uninsured coverage plus medical payment for injuries you suffer in the wreck.

For a 19 year old the minimum coverage for liability is not a bad idea. They have no assets to lose. BUT, never fail to get uninsured or underinsured coverage of at least 100k. Get a large medical payment coverage to, at least 10k.

I cannot tell you how many times people come into my office with horrific injuries and there is nothing I can do for them. One guy last month lost his hand in a rollover. Hit by drunk driver. He declined the uninsured coverage and the guy who hit him had no insurance. Guy who hit him got out of jail and skipped town, probably back to Mexico. SO - this guy would at least gotten uninsured 100k...but he went cheap. I sent him away since I can't help him.

My buddy settled a case last week, guy had 1 million in underinsured coverage. Bad accident. Got 100k from guy who hit him and 230k fresh money from his own insurance company. Yes, it is worth it. (And a million in coverage is pretty cheap. Just ask.)

As for companies DO NOT GET ALLSTATE. Geico and Progressive are not bad. I have Ameriprise. Try to get a company that does not have a large presence in your state. Why? THey are easier to deal with, not wanting to litigate everything with you. Also, you get to pick the repair garage if you get comprehensive.

8. I just tried to get an online quote from Ameriprise, this is what I got:
We regret that we are unable to fulfill your request for coverage because it does not fit our eligibility criteria. More specifically, we are declining coverage because there is no record of prior insurance.

Well there is no record of prior insurance because she has never owned a vehicle before. The other problem with somebody her age is that she has no credit history, only just started her first job and never having a credit card or making payments on anything.

I wouldn't go to Allstate for anything.

(My goddaughter just moved here to La Crosse, WI from a Chicago suburb.)
