Best death scene of a star in a TV series...
I'm going for either Tasha Yar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4Sb9BHmaxU

or

Anyone from Buffy/Angel: Cordelia Chase, Jenny Calendar, Doyle, Tara.

11. Randy "Doc" Matsuda in 'Tour Of Duty'.
Probably no one here knows what I'm talking about...

Great character. Such a sad and unexpected death.

Although, in retrospect, I should have known something was up early in the episode when his story arc became: "Hey guys! Guess what I'm going to do when I get home from Vietnam?"

That was the death sentence right there...

62. The first time "Tour Of Duty" killed off a major character, they announced it beforehand.
Not so with Doc Matsuda.

It was an episode in which the company gets a new CO, an ambitious staff flunky who requests a combat command in order to further his career. He turns out to be hopelessly incompetent.

The firebase is besieged by NVA regulars who overrun the base at the end killing Matsuda (total surprise; didn't see it coming) and many other supporting characters. Most of the other major figures survived the siege.

68. Not unless it was in the 2nd or 3rd seasons, which I barely watched.
The first season was not only the best, but it was the only good season of the show. It went rapidly downhill in the second season trying to appeal to a broader audience, including women.

There was an episode in the first season in which Marcus Taylor was preparing to go home when he finds out his girlfriend has dumped him and his Detroit neighborhood has been demolished due to urban renewal. A fast-talking recruiter convinces him to re-enlist. When his platoon buddies find out about it, they manage to steal the re-enlistment papers and destroy them, allowing Taylor to go home. Taylor, however, changes his mind and stays for a second tour.

21. One I've always remembered was Lt Norman Buntz from Hill Street Blues.
Dennis Franz played a cop transferred from another precinct who never fit in, for several seasons. The captain kept making crazy demands on him, like delaying an undercover sting until the bad guy cut his finger off. So he went dirty and stole drugs or money (I forget which), and through a sequence of events I can't remember, he wound up held up in a bank vault with the rest of the precinct surrounding him, about to arrest him. He started the normal "reflect on the sadness of life before killing yourself" bit, and while most of the cops tried to talk him out of it, JD (the off-and-on alcoholic with his own problems) yelled out "Do the right thing!" A moment later you hear the gun shot.

Powerful scene, I always thought.

26. Your memory is a little fuzzy
Franz played a very bad cop, Sal Benedetto who offed himself on Hill Street Blues but then they brought him back as Norman Buntz.

Buntz's HSB storyline ended by his punching out the chief and then spinning off with Sid (Peter Jurasik) the Snitch to his own show Beverly Hills Buntz.
