Star Trek question... any Trekkies out there?
The other night I was having a bout with insomnia so I turned on Netflix and decided to watch the 2009 Star Trek movie. I thought it was good. For those of you that haven't seen it, it goes back to when Spock and Kirk first met.

Anyway, I was describing the film to my wife the next day and everything I said, she responded that she had seen that before. I know she didn't see this movie though. So I thought maybe it was a remake.... I did some googling and it seems like perhaps it was a remake but I couldn't find any reference to the original.

Can anyone tell me if that last Star Trek movie was a remake and if so, what is the original film?

thanks

1. No, not a remake at all, though it included many instances alluded to in the series and other movies
So she wouldn't have "seen" any of it before, but would have heard about many of the scenes.

Shattner was all pissed off and refused to be in the film because he didn't get enough screentime.

3. Totally new story line. There are a SHITLOAD of subtle (and not so subtle) references.
Edited on Thu Nov-04-10 10:28 AM by HopeHoops
The story is totally new. It actually changes the space-time continuum, so I'm expecting a second one to come out where they try to prevent the destruction of Vulcan.

On Edit: I especially liked Bones calling Spock a "green-blooded hobgoblin". He did it under his breath and after Spock was out of pointy-earshot, but in the TV series he said it to his face.

4. the story is supposed to be an 'alternate' timeline
since so much of the movie was out of canon

i still had fun watching it...

5. They couldn't have done otherwise. Keep in mind, the first two movies were TV show remakes.
"V-Ger" and "Wrath of Khan" were just expanded TV shows - the first with way too much filler time.

9. V-Ger was indeed Nomad on steroids, but Wrath of Kahn is a sequel to Space Seed.
And of course, the next two movies were sequels to WoK.

The (reboot) movie is totally new, and recasts the original characters in a new action format. Each of them is slightly different from the 62's originals, but Kirk, Spock and McCoy are the least changed. I liked it, and look forward to the next one. Assuming they are making another; I haven't heard.

10. I just watched IV yesterday (again) - the whales were all animatronic!
That's still my favorite one because the original crew just has a "FUCK IT" attitude about everything. Scotty: "How do I know he didn't invent the stuff?"

16. Actually the First movie was originally slated to be a TV Series...

That would have been the flagship show of a Paramount-owned network. But, the plans fell through, and the TV Show Became Star Trek The Motion Picture. A couple of completed scripts for this series eventually were rewritten as episodes for Star Trek: The Next Generation.

6. purists disliked the newer film - messed with the "canon" too much
it was fun, but not so much for some of us who grew up with the original series, later series and the old movies.

7. Not all purists feel that way
A lot of us love that we have a new universe to learn about. Part of the fun for me has always been learning about the trek universe. That universe still exists, but now I have a new one to learn about. To me, I can't wait to hear about what else has changed.

21. I thought it was a bit too slick - frankly I thought Enterprise was a bit more
honest about the old days. Suum quique.

8. Hey, I enjoyed it
I was wondering how they were going to continue the ST movie franchise with the original characters and NOT simply recreate the old TV shows or movies.

11. I would qualify as a "purist", but I thought the new film kicked ass.
They did things the original series would have loved to do, but hey, they were working with 60's technology. The only REAL "purist gripe" would require delving into the never-aired pilot (later incorporated into the 2-part TV show as a historical document) that would put Decker as the original commander with Spock on the bridge. "I still can't get used to having a woman on the bridge" <- REALLY politically correct.

12. "Decker as the original commander"??????
What are you talking about? AFAIK, the first Captain of the Enterprise was supposed to be Robert April, who morphed into Christopher Pike, who morphed into Kirk.

13. The Forbidden Planet. Remember the one where Spock committed mutiny?
They replayed the original pilot (that never aired) as part of that two-part show.

25. I believe you are confused.
The original filmed pilot was "The Cage" starring Jeffery Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike. Decker was nowhere to be found.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cage_%28Star_Trek%29

You may be confusing Pike with Commodore Matt Decker who commanded the USS Constellation which was destroyed in The Doomsday Machine. Matt Decker was the father of Captain Will Decker, who briefly commanded the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Captains of the original Enterprise NCC-1701 goes like this:

Robert April (1st) only appeared in the Animated Series as an old man.
Christopher Pike (2nd) The Cage
James Kirk (3rd) TOS
Will Decker (4th) The Motion Picture
James Kirk (5th) The Motion Picture
Spock (6th) Wrath of Khan
James Kirk (7th and last) Wrath of Khan / Search for Spock

27. Yeah, the pilot was called the Cage (I have it on VHS), They aired it in the 2-part show.
My bad then. It has been a while since I've seen either and I just remembered it as Decker. Besides, they have artistic liberty here. If they stuck to the original flow and timeline, it would just be rehashing old TV themes. I like that they've taken a new direction.

20. eh, the whole Vulcan thing left a bad taste in my mouth.. and Spock as some
face-sucking hipster was a bit much.

I did like seeing some younger actors as the original characters, though.

14. There were things I liked in the movie, but at the end it left a bad taste in my mouth
I loved seeing the trio young, but had a problem with Spock and Uhura's relationship, and Uhura in general.

I just don't buy Spock kissing Uhura in front of everyone. Spock would have had trouble even kissing her. Showing off in front of the crew? That's pure Kirk, not Spock

As for Uhura....

As a little girl watching the show, I loved Uhura. I could watch her and feel confident she wouldn't embarrass me by running and falling, getting hysterical, having an assignment and proving to be incompetent/weak and needing a man to take over (like Susan from the fantastic four. I hated her.).

She was cool, calm, intelligent and sophisticated. Pure class. I remember her fixing the equipment on her station, and Spock telling her there was no one better qualified for the task.

The new Uhura had nothing of the original one in her. All her personality and class were gone. Fans of the movie argued that the original Uhura had very little screen time. Yes, she had less central screen time than the trio, but she was always there, part of the team. a crucial element of the mission success.

NuUhura got upgraded to what? The overly emotional and quick tempered girlftiend....and oh, we also go to see her in her underwear. You've come a long way baby...not

Considering this that they found a way to wipe out the original series, I doubt I see the next installment TOS has a very spacial place in my heart, my childhood. and I can't stand to see it dismissed like that

Edited on Thu Nov-04-10 04:37 PM by MilesColtrane
Just two more things that would/should never happen if Abrams had retained an ounce of the original character's integrity.

17. I forgot about that! Ridiculous! The movie might have cooler special effects
but Star Trek wasn't about special effects. It was a character driven show. Once you mess with the integrity of the characters you lose the essence of the show.

Really, changing the space-time continuum seems to me like a lazy move. Banking on already hugely popular characters, yet finding a way to erase their history so you can do anything you want to them without any regard or respect of who they were. After all, nothing we saw ever happened, so they can "grow and change in a new direction".

Sorry, not interested.

18. ?
Spock was on the point of choking Kirk to death when Sarek stopped him. Unless humans bring a nuke to the knife fight, they can't win one against Vulcans; they're much stronger than we are.

Remember the Pon Farr ritual (Amok Time, TOS), Spock was beating Kirk like a cheap rug. The only thing that saved Kirk's life was Bones stepping in and faking his death.

As for attacking Kirk, as Spock Prime told him to do, Kirk pushed Spock's two hot buttons - Mom and his home. Vulcans have very strong emotions which is why they work so hard to control them. When they do lose their stuff, they make up for years of repression.

One other thought, TOS Spock was a mature man who had learned total (usually) control over his emotions. Alternate Spock was still young and still learning.

Just like he did http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Side_of_Paradise_%28Star_Trek%29">in the original series while under similarly intense emotional distress, by the way.

28. There are a lot of throwback references (which I think would be unavoidable with
Star Trek since it has such a long history and cracked out fan base) but it's a new movie.
