Democratic Cardinal fans ought to be IRATE

The Cards have invited pResident Bush* to throw out the first pitch in Monday's home opener.

That ticks me off.

Is it any wonder I am a Cubs fan?

I don't have season tickets but I urge those St Louis Cardinal fans who are Dems and have season tickets to write the box office and let them know of your unhappiness.

Of all things sports should be free of politics.

2. One of the few things I like about Bush...

...is that he likes baseball. Legend has it that trading Sosa is one of the few mistakes for which Bush has publically apologized.

It's traditional for a sitting President to throw out the first ball somewhere on opening day. I don't begrudge Mr. Bush his ceremonial time on the mound in St. Louis. Baseball is good for the soul. If only Bush spent more time at baseball games and less time scheming to destroy his detractors, we might end up better off.

Plus, let's look on the bright side - maybe he'll get booed!

5. Part of the problem

is that professional athletes are rich, and hence, often Republicans.

That said, and while I certainly wouldn't get up and clap if I were at the game, Pres. Bush is after all a former owner of the Texas Rangers. And I don't actually think there's a whole lot wrong with the symbolism of the President (well, the institution of the presidency, anyway) throwing out the first pitch on opening day of our national pastime. Course, I'd much rather have a Dem doing it...

that statement is WAAAAAY off. Most pro athletes (I'm talking NFL, NBA, MLB) are democrat leaning. There are some repukes and those ones usually seem to make the most noise.

6. Sports and politics

have also had plenty of intertwining in American history--first and foremost being FDR's famous letter to Commisioner Judge Landis in 1941 instructing him not to shut baseball down during WWII. (All the rest of the pro sports had at least some kind of hiatus during the conflict.) As well, baseball has been at the forefront of anti-trust legislation. The tradition of the seventh-inning stretch started when William Taft stood up at a game and the whole stadium stood up out of respect for the presidency. Can you imagine that!?
