I brought them in the house a week or so ago. I know they don't need much water, but seems like they probably need it once in a while, particularly with the heat running and drying out the air.

1. Enough to keep them from shriveling too much, but not so much that they get root rot. |
|
The latter will kill them. The former just makes them look a little like prunes for a day or two.

2. Are these cactuses, aloe, or jade plants? |
|
Jade plants or aloe: maybe once a month/once every six weeks.
Cactus: maybe once every three months during the winter, and more often during the summer.

3. I don't really know; they are from Latin AMerica, or so the labels on them said. |
|
They aren't cactuses. Sort of like aloe.
I'll go with your suggestions for jade/aloe. :hi:

4. in L.A. I have mine out on a balcony... |
|
I basically water them once a week (maybe a little less in the "winter") and they seem to do fine. plus they are in breathable porous pots (not plastic or glazed) that makes a difference too.
(they are all succulents)

5. You are SO right about clay pots! |
|
I grow orchids (200+) on my Bay Area balcony, and they're all in unglazed clay. Roots like to breathe!

we need pictures of your orchids. that's amazing.
you must put a heck of a lot of work into that balcony garden - orchids are not the easiest flower to grow (understatement). must be beautiful to wake up to every day.
