How to emigrate?

A question for the ex-pats out there. How does one go about getting the hell out of this crap hole? It looks like my job will be disappearing in the not so distant future. Since I am a working man,I feel I am no longer wanted here in the US.

How do I go about getting a job outside the US? I know I will need one to leave.

Wants bodies. Check the internet doing a keyword search on "New Zealand" and "emigrate". Wife and I have researched it as well.

I'm Australian, British, widely travelled, and I reckon I have never seen any country on Earth as beautiful as New Zealand. It has everything every other country has, but better! Snow covered Alps? Screw Switzerland, Mount Cook Ranges are gobsmacking. Beaches? Forget those scrabbly gravel pits of Hawaii, bugger Tahiti, not even Australia's beaches match the stuff up in Bay of Islands. Fjords? Those pipsqueak indents in Norway are laughable compared to the South-West coast of South Island.

But out of interest - what's your first choice?

but check international newspapers and the internet of course. Why stick to English speaking countries? The whole world is interesting, but, of course, you must avoid places where it is not safe for Americans (thanks to your government's foreign policies).

Going to a non-english speaking country either. I just want to get the hell out of here,at least for a while. As long as I can go somewhere where working people are valued,it's all good.

8. What's the skill set?

Countries have different needs.

Australia and NZ both seriously short of medical types, from doctors through nursing, physios, etc, but US qualifications for Doctors are not considered adequate and further training is required.

IT types, especially techie practitioners in SAP highly in demand in Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Middle East.

Canada may soon be setting up special refugee status for Americans fleeing political, religious or sexual-orientation persecution (not entirely joking there).

Australia represents the best possible place for North Americans, imo.

Right now,I am working as a television board op/engineer. I really like the work.


I have worked a lot of jobs over the years. I was a heavy equipment mechanic back in the 80's,and worked a couple years in a print shop.I have also worked as a burner/fitter building heat exchangers and other equipment for oilfield applications.

On edit: 30 years as an electric guitarist. 20 years as vocalist.
Spent a lot of time behind a mixer both live and studio.

That sounds like the sort of skill needed in a number of industries. Your age might be a factor - above 45, forget it, unless coming with money to set up your own company.

But give it a go! This wondrous country is full of Americans and Canadians who came for a time and never left!

I was originally contemplating suicide, but emigration to New Zealand (which I do qualify for :party: ) or Canada (only as a refugee basis, I failed their introductary exam :cry: ) might give me a few more years... I prefer Canada because of its closer distance, but New Zealand's rather cool too...

Here is a link page for the universities. A scottish university is preferable because the cost of living is
lower, and the immigration requirement (as you can read in the 4th link below) is around scotland.
For all practical purposes, you could use this address as your "home" the instant you arrive so that
you have a consistent address until you do!

they'll accept work-equivalency for an undergrad... and heck, you
could pursue an undergrad if you were so inclined... but there is also a programme called a "new route Ph.D" that you could also
pursue with a work-equivalency undergrad.

I have no undergrad... i did a masters at Heriot-Watt. I live in
Scotland. I'll be 42 this year. It works.

Where there is a will there is a way. Scotland and American go way
way back and there is no reason NOT to reverse emigrate, considering the
number of scots who've come the other way.

Scotland is experiencing strategic depopulation. Make your bid for
power and re-invigorate the DNA-pool of the northeast atlantic.

Also, Dubai is turning into a modern hypercity... think the Middle-east's Hongkong, but with better architecture and shopping.
