It's time for the annual DU Veterans Day, veterans check in!!!
Denbot, U.S. Navy USS Barney DDG-6, 1977-81, with a campaign ribbon for service in the Persian Gulf during the Iranian Hostage Crisis.

My father served in the Air Force in the late 50's working on 52's on various SAC bases.

My Grand Father served in WWII on the Kalinin Bay CVE-68, and participated in the Battle off Samar (Taffy 3)

My uncles and cousins from both side of my family served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and Gulf war I.

My Great Great Grandfather's served on both sides of the Apache wars, and in my opinion the wrong side won that one..

The RF-84/F THUNDERFLASH

"RF-84F Thunderflash reconnaissance version. The first YRF-84F was completed in February 1952.<1> The aircraft retained an armament of four .50 cal. machine guns and could carry up to fifteen cameras. Innovations included computerized controls which adjusted camera settings for light, speed, and altitude, a periscope to give the pilot better visualization of the target, and a wire voice recorder to let the pilot narrate his observations. Being largely identical to the F-84F, the Thunderflash suffered from the same production delays and engine problems, delaying operational service until March 1954. The aircraft was retired from active duty in 1957, only to be reactivated in 1961, and finally retired from the ANG in 1972."

The RF-84/F was 'affectionately' known as the 'Hawg'.
As in 'groundhawg'.
Because it loved the ground so much and took so much of it to get airborne.
Notoriously underpowered.
In spite of that, I had a helluva lot of fun flying it for 7 years.

As you can see, it was obsolete 6 years before I checked out in it.
OH well, I guess that's what kept me out of Viet Nam.
