Edited on Sat Nov-13-10 02:02 AM by Skip Intro
I finally named the crazy girl who has taken over my house Cooper.

1. My dear Skip Intro!
I am not currently owned by any cats, but I've had a few over my life...

The first one was KiKi, and she was part of my family from my very early childhood till nearly college...

Then my husband and I had Felix, who sadly came to an early end. We never found out what killed him. He had a short but very happy life.

Then we adopted a young Siamese female, who we named Sheba. She died early too, from shock after her spay. Distraught hardly described me.

Then we got Muon, our sub-atomic cat. A muon is a sub-atomic particle, or so I'm told...She lived to be 13 years old, finally!

When she was 2, a couple of neighborhood boys showed up at our front door with a not-yet weaned feral kitten. They told us their parents wouldn't let them keep him, and they wondered if we could.

We could.

My husband named him Goliath, since he cried a lot and spent a lot of time sitting on my foot.

He did grow into his name, and became the terror of the neighborhood. He was a gorgeous, prince of a cat...He had a long, successful life.

Then there was Whiskers. He was feral. Someone dropped him off in our yard, and we gradually adopted him. Lots of love and food won him over...I used to sit in the driveway, and wheedle him into coming to me so I could pet him. He gradually came to trust me...

He was the last...

Good luck with Cooper!

:hi:

2. You have a wonderful way with words. Really, you do.
Your post was a pleasure to read, not just for the meaning of what you were saying, but for your beautiful way with words. Such talent.

If you don't mind me saying so, you need another cat.

Go rescue one from the local shelter. Do it around Thanksgiving. You'll know which one when you see it. It'll be the Christmas cat.

11. Airhead and Pisspot
Oh, you mean their REAL names?

The airhead (really, she's an eedjit, but lovable) is named Jasmine. The pisspot (really a pisspot) is named Clover. Both were strays, so Jasmine was given a temporary name by the shelter--I forget what it was--that we changed when we adopted her.

My coworker's daughter found Clover in her neighborhood (down to 4 lbs. and eating out of garbage cans) and named her that because she thought she was lucky to have been taken in. Twelve years on, we say she's lucky we still let her live here. Truly--she's one of the most annoying pets in the history of domestication. But--sigh--she's family.

Our dear departed alpha male was named Dilbert because he liked to walk on our keyboards and chase the cursor on the screen.

12. WORD OF CAUTION: If you post things like pet names/mother's maden name, don't use them for security.
Sometimes you don't have a choice - it may be from a short drop down list or no option at all (just give us this). The true answer is always the easiest to remember, but if you post anything online (here, Facebook, etc.) with that information you are revealing the answer to a potential last line of defense against fraud. Granted and ID thief would need more information than that, but if you also store your username and password for easy access (which many people do) and your laptop gets stolen, a quick search of the net could provide that final piece of the puzzle since the challenge questions are often only used when the machine is accessing the site from an unfamiliar location. Even with the username and password, not knowing the answer can shut down the access attempt.

Sorry to sound like a fear-monger, but that's the reality we live in now.

I would say, "come here girl". She probably thought that "girl" was her name.

On a different note, I had a friend as a kid who didn't have a first name until he was 16. His parents finally let him pick his own since he was told he needed on for his state DL.

Milo is a large, fluffy orange and white lover-boy. Jeoffry is a sleek, handsome gray tabby; I named him after the cat in the wonderful poem "Jubilate Agno" by Christopher Smart, here: http://wonderingminstrels.blogspot.com/2001/01/jubilate-agno-christopher-smart.html ("For he is of the Tribe of Tiger."). And Pixie is an adorable, mischievous part-Siamese bundle of fluff and energy.

23. The most recent group...dating from about 4 years ago...
Roughly four years ago an handsome grey feral (we named him Sir Thomas Grey) set up his harem underneath our front porch. There were four breeding females, all of whom I trapped, spayed and released, but not before they produce a bumper prop of kittens. Sir Thomas never allowed himself to be trapped, and he wandered off when there was no more action, as it were.
All of the breeding females but one also wandered away. I was left with some of the kittens (the rest were adopted) who live with us now.Three calico sisters were named Olga, Masha and Irina, for all you Checkov lovers. Sergei, is their orange tom littermate.
Two other kittens, Esme, a very Victorian looking semi-longhair and her brother Dennis Leary (who spent a few early weeks hissing at me, hence the name) pretty much control our house downstairs.
Then there's Monsoon, who arrived on our porch a few years before the harem came, a kitten all alone in the pouring rain.

And the mother of them all, the feral who lives outside and lets me pet her when I feed her, is a lovely strawberry blonde. So we named her Nicole Kitman.

24. Spot, Jelly, Samara, Selena, and Kenai.
Spot and Jelly are siblings--Spot is a female black-and-white splotched kitty, and Jelly is an neutered male orange tabby. Samara and Kenai are also siblings, although they aren't related to Spot and Jelly--they're actually some kind of Siamese mix, and they're color-pointed like Siamese, with blue eyes. Selena is a more-recent foundling who looks like a female version of a cat we had that passed away--solid black with a white chin, apron, whiskers, and tummy. She appears to be roughly the same age as Samara and Kenai, so the three of them all get along pretty well. Her name is technically Selena (because she has this interesting full-moon marking on her throat) but we lovingly refer to her a "Gordita" half the time. She was starving and thin when we found her, and when she suddenly had free access to plenty of good food, she became something of a piggy. She's actually a little plump now! She's still very possessive of the food dish, so she has to be fed separately--otherwise she'll snarl at the others if they come near her while she's eating.

We'll probably end up keeping her because she doesn't need any more trauma right now, but we're looking for a home for Kenai (pronounced KEE-nye) because he absolutely can NOT bring himself to get used to our dog Toby. All the others are either friendly with Toby or are willing to ignore his presence, but Kenai is completely intolerant of him and we can't keep Kenai locked in our bedroom all the time in order to keep them apart. He's a gorgeous cat--he looks very much like a Siamese. So does Samara, but her color-pointing isn't quite as symmetrical and evenly shaded as Kenai's. Those two were brought to us last summer by a friend who lives across town--someone dropped them off in her yard when they were only about 6 weeks old. They had some fear and trauma issues for a while, but Spot basically "adopted" them, and proceeded to start lactating a little for them! I didn't know female cats could do that if they weren't pregnant or nursing already, but apparently they can. Anyway, they're both pretty normal and people-friendly now, although Kenai is much more of an independent little man and Samara is a very easily-spooked and rather clingy girl. Funny that the independent one hates the dog while the scared, shy one just ignores the dog completely.

If anyone near North-Central West Virginia is interested in a sweet little boy kitty who looks like a Siamese (slightly-crossed blue eyes and all)...just let me know. As you can tell, it's probably best if you DON'T have a dog, although Kenai gets along just fine with other cats.

This picture isn't great because it's from my phone, but it was taken about 5 minutes ago. This is Kenai snuggling with Jelly. The quality stinks, but you can still see those gorgeous colorpoint markings and big blue eyes. Unlike a purebred Siamese, he has white "boots" and a couple of dark toes--very cute. He's about 5-6 months old by our estimation. :)

27. When I was very little...
I had a cat named "Weetie". I was in my twenties before my mother explained the cat's name was "Sweetie"--I just couldn't pronounce my "esses". In my early thirties I had Beaujolais and Zinfandel (yes, I like wine) then Stuart and Pollyanna (an orphan cat--my husband named her). Pollyanna currently lives with my mother, a confirmed "cat-hater" who has spoiled her rotten.

34. The outdoor feral is Cody, a gray tabby shorthair
Let's see, inside I have, starting in order of seniority - Shadow, a gray domestic longhair adopted from Petsmart; Kimi, a tortie/tabbie/white Norwegian Forest Cat. Her littermate Loki, a 22-lb cream tabby. Then Mitts, an adopted neighborhood stray, also a cream tabby; Bearcat, a tuxedo shorthair, also a neighborhood stray, reformed tomcat. Lastly Mr. Wiggles, another neighborhood stray, gray tabby shorthair, well, his breed should really be puppy-cat or kitty-dog, he seems more dog-like than any cat I've ever known, and I've known a lot.

There are several other ferals who come around, but I haven't gotten to know them well enough to name them. Knowing me, it's only a matter of time.
