Does anyone stream content to your tv via Netflix or other?

I'm about to buy, at 4am Thanksgiving night/the next morning, a sony blu ray player for $99 (deep discount) with all kinds of free streaming content. I canceled Dish a few months ago due to economic hardship (bad situation that got worse today, but we won't go there). This player not only delivers Netflix, but tons of other channels, most of them free. I will, by the time Christmas gets here, have gone from $70 a month for Dish to less than $10 a month for Netflix and over the air programming, plus tons of free content from the Sony bravia library. Wondering if anyone else has made a similar jump...

There are many here who use Netflix. For me it has been the best bang for my entertainment buck that I have ever gotten with thousands of videos, movies, documentaries, and tv series old and new. My tv is free and over the air (13 channels) so Netflix is pretty much it for me for its wide variety. Myself I use the Roku set top box to connect with Netflix because it is so easy and offers a good number of other free channels and easy access to Amazon streaming video rentals (you can buy them as well and they are stored on the Amazon site).

I pay $11/month for one disc out at a time because I, too, have Blu-Ray and use it to check out any Blu-Ray discs I might like to purchase. I have good turnaround time and can get 3 movies a week, but overwhelmingly my use and enjoyment of Netflix is their streaming video.

Hopefully our new group will be approved soon so we will have a single place where we can talk about Netflix and other streaming video and get good discussions about videos as well as suggestions for good ones to view.

2. Make sure the blu ray player is wifi ENABLED

Not wifi READY...if it's enabled it has a built in wifi adapter. If it's only ready you need to purchase a separate adapter which could easily run about 60-70 bucks.


We have Netflix and LOVE LOVE LOVE it. The amount of streaming video available is awesome.

7. My Sony Blu-ray is not WiFi capable

I hard wired (had to) my Blu-ray to my router with a 14 foot ethernet cable (same plug as your cable broadband connection). The cable was only 5.24 at Amazon. No other devices needed.

8. You're absolutely correct.

Seems like more and more things are aimed towards wireless (we've gone wireless on everything except the PS3) and I hate the damn cord my husband pulls out and runs across the hallway to plug it into the PS3.

14. The new ones have built in wireless.

We got ours when they first were released and you either have to buy an expensive wireless adapter or use an ethernet cable. We use the cable.

3. I watch Netflix & Hulu on my TV by using a VGA cable attached to my laptop.

I may be purchasing a Roku player in the near future.

4. I stream anything from internet to my TV - including NetFlix

Hulu is another favorite.

Netflix is one of the true bargains out there in video. I heard they may soon offer a streaming only. I want to dump Cox Comm(unism) which costs us $130/mo for phone/internet/ and just HD + MSNBC. We'll have to get the latter off of the web with an hour or two delay.

12. We stream Netflix to the Xbox 360

Works like a charm. Very handy for when MG Jr. gets itchy to see a new-to-him movie or episodes of a TV show.

15. I stream via my TivoHD, and it works pretty well, since I already was a Netflix member,

there's no incremental cost, so it's just like extra goodie. It does HD pretty well, assuming you have a decent cable connection.

16. Built an inexpensive media PC JUST for that purpose

and it works great. My beautiful Daughter uses her PS3 or XBox or Wii I am not sure.
