I see 10% of going-to-sites get redirected.... Some five times. Like Wikipedia now and then. Do thugs put malwre on wiki? Does just viewing a Google "cache" of Wiki ... avoid any such malware. ... Or does it travel intact thru Google to me?

8. Okay, not an expert but I can address some of this.

Blackberry uses an a proprietary OS and not a Microsoft OS. I doubt anybody is writing viruses for it, though I guess theoretically they could. It's a rather secure OS built around data security, enough so that several nations have banned the functional aspects of *any* Blackberry web utilities as a hedge against terrorist as the security services of those nations lack the technology to crack BB encryption of transferred data.

If your phone was made around Jan 2010 and it's a Blackberry (meaning it's a Curve, Tour or Storm2 most likely) it's using solid state chip-set memory to store the OS and applications and removable media to store files, music, media, pics, etc.

As for the redirects, that's partially the OS and partially the nature of smartphone browsing. Most well-written websites detect smartphone connections and auto-redirect them to stripped-down "mobile" versions of the webpage prior to loading...it's onerous though because the nature of HTML code forces it to be. In the case of Wikipedia for example, that redirect tree might look like this:

Basically, we're talking about memory on a chip, that's non-volatile, so unlike RAM in a computer, it retains information even when the device is turned off.

Like the memory in a USB thumb drive - all on a chip.

Or to put it another way, I have not seen a phone with a spinning hard drive - all the ones I've seen use flash memory.

Lots of iPods do use small hard drives, though because of their light mass (especially when compared to drives in PCs) and shock mounting, you're able to carry them around and use them normally as long as you don't bang them around too much.

17. I doubt it's a virus or malware.

To be honest, I'd say a lot of it is the limitations of your phone - compared to a PC, Blackberrys don't have a lot of computing horsepower - slow CPU when compared to the Intel or AMD chip in your PC, not much RAM to work with, so the little web-browser easily gets brought to its knees by normal web sites that a PC or Mac can handle without breaking a sweat.

For that reason, I've personally been wanting a newer Android phone for Christmas - the newer ones (especially the ones with 1GHz processors) have more computing power and memory, and can handle web surfing much better than my old Blackberry.
