1. Figuring out what a girl was hiding and wanting to drive a car - that's what I was thinking.
I found out about girls - that was good. REALLY good.

I found out about cars - that was good, at least until I had to pay for a repair. It got worse from there.

Otherwise, yeah, it was pretty dumb.

3. We weren't thinking, just anticipating what looked like fun in the grown up world.

6. I was afraid of growing up.
I was pretty sure I would be entirely unable to cope. I am doing way better than I ever thought possible.

7. It was all about the candy. My mom used to hide bags of spearmint leaves
that she did not share with us and she said when I grew up I could buy all the candy I wanted - and it's TRUE!!!

8. I reminded by 19 year old goddaughter about this
since she is now responsible for herself and paying bills. I told her, "Remember when I used to tell you when you just turned 13 not to be in a hurry to grow up?" Because now she understands, but she was no different from the rest of us and wanted to grow up in a hurry. Growing up happens so quickly anyways, but it's nice if you can enjoy and appreciate being a kid while you still are a kid.

I can remember the summer when I was 16 and hanging out at the neighborhood park, bemoaning to the park director how my friends were working summer jobs and I didn't have one. He said to me, "Chee (my nickname was Chi Chi, which got shortened to Cheech--too many Steves), you're going to be working for most of the rest of your life after you get out of school--enjoy your summers off while you can". And he was right.
