With parliament's approval, he would be king and be co-monarch - William III and Mary II.

because he was foreign born. There was no way Parliament would go for it. So his title was Prince Consort. I don't know if they considered it for Prince Consort Philip or not.

My one gush about this situation: William gave her his mother's engagement ring. So sweet!

Perhaps the most important consideration concerning a dual monarchy is the possibility that he'll outlive her as Wm III did.

As for Phil, word is it was considered for a nanosecond, then dropped. QM Elizabeth loathed the Mountbattens and Phil is an arrogant asshole.

I suspect the engagement ring will be given to each bride of a future PofW.

This was pretty much Prince Williams first love and they were friends long before they became romantic together. (They shared a flat at college along with other classmates).

Prince Charles was a bit of a playboy in his early years and honestly, it seems like Diana was some random pick from eligible single women. Charles never had the established relationship with Diana that William has with Kate.

Also, since Will and Kate went public with their relationship a few years back, Kate has had years now dealing with the intense public scrutiny that goes along with dating someone who would be the next King of England. No one had a clue who Diana was until she became engaged to Charles, so she pretty much was thrusted into the limelight with no preparation whatsoever.

Vanity Fair had a really great article about Will & Kate's engagement and for Will he was smart and said he would not marry until 28-30. He really wanted to make sure not only that Kate was the one but that she was comfortable with being in the public limelight.

He is next in line to the throne after his father Prince Charles; and if/when he is King, his wife will be Queen. But (a) the recent Royals don't have a terribly strong record for *staying* married to their first spouse; and (b) while I'm fairly sure that Britain will keep the Monarchy as long as Liz is Queen, I'm less sure what will happen after she dies or abdicates.

Charles would have to formally abdicate his position in succession for that to happen. Doing so and letting the crown go straight to William would probably be a popular move, considering that Will is liked and Camillia isn't.

Queen regnant: monarch in her own right, ie Elizabeth II
Queen mother: mother of the reigning monarch
Queen dowager: wife of the former monarch, but not mother of current.

If and if, she will have all the perks, but she can not reign herself. The most she might do is be a regent, ie hold the reins if the heir apparent is a minor.
