21. Turns out it's an old theory...now debunked, sort of...
The link below, one of many, goes into a very very complicated genetic explanation...the simplest part of which is, that, in fact, a man gets the pattern baldness from his mother. SHE in turn, got it from her father...

"....Once a male is born with the baldness gene he automatically passes it on to all his female offspring. If his mate is normal with the gene for baldness (Xn Xb) each female child born has a 50-50 chance of being born with male pattern baldness. This is because bald men can only give the Xb gene. This causes bald men to pass the gene and deplete the stock of Xn Xn females. This is how the women are able to keep producing males with pattern baldness. In total population about 30% of all females are Pattern Bald......"

(see:)
www.essortment.com/all/malepatternbal_rcad.htm

Women carrying the gene don't usually go bald themselves because there are other genetic/hormonal components that block it from occuring.

Another source:

".....It turns out, however, that the old theory was based primarily on one study conducted in, get this, 1916. Doctors were still prescribing mustard plasters in 1916. Clearly the time had come for a fresh look, particularly in light of our expanding knowledge of the human genome. Preliminary investigations hinted that baldness had something to do with the sex chromosomes--to be precise, the X chromosome, which a man inherits from his mother. (His father contributes the Y chromosome that makes him male.) Now comes a German study (Hillmer et al, American Journal of Human Genetics, July 2005) stating flatly that the major determinant of early baldness is a gene men get from their moms...."

So go figure. Both Charles' and Diana's fathers are petty bald.

Cheers.

37. the gene comes from the X chromosome - the mother
"The suspect gene variation sits on the X chromosome, which is handed down to men by their mother. So a man may get an idea of his scalp's future from men on his mother's side of the family."

17. From a balding guy, thanks!
For whatever reason, a receding hairline was passed down to me. That's life, and though I wouldn't mind having my full head of hair again, I can live with it.

10. That's right, because any amount of baldness in a man is SHAMEFUL. Sick and unmanly.
He should be ASHAMED that he's going bald, and do everything he can to hide it, because being bald - even a little bit - is SHAMEFUL.

How dare he make the rest of us feel uncomfortable.

27. That action looks bad. The poor hair that's left only highlights the hair that isn't.
He needs to take the clippers to it. I'm lucky enough to not have a bald spot, but when it comes the hair that's left gets the buzz treatment.

34. Far be it from me to judge one's personal choice . . .
But my view is that men who wear rugs have difficulty accepting reality and are way too self-conscious. If that's your choice, then so be it. But if anyone asked me about it I would passionately argue them getting one (same goes for plugs and the other quick fixes). A thick gorgeous mane does provide some benefits and a lack of one does carry drawbacks, though none are as pronounced as many people think they are.
