A stranger gave me 48 cents the other day. I have been going to the

same convenience store for coffee since 1988, nearly every day.

Monday I asked the manager if she wanted me to clean the rubber mats (the kind one sees in the coffee pot, soda dispenser areas) that were outside on the posts between parking spaces and store front. I've done this many times while having coffee.

She agreed. I did it. When I came back inside to get my jacket, she said a customer asked her if I worked there, and she told him I don't, I'm merely retired with not a lot to do some days.

He gave his change, 48 cents, asked her to give it to me and then he left.

We put it in the jar for the children's hospital.

Even though it was a small amount, we (the manager and I) thought it was a nice gesture.
