Today's College Football Tailgate Thread (Wrigley Field Edition)
Northwestern and Illinois are playing at the friendly confines today. It’s the first football game to be played in Wrigley Field since 1970, and the first college football game since 1938 … and unless they can figure out a way to position the football field such that both end zones are actually usable, it’ll probably be the last.

They’re also playing football at Yankee Stadium today, with a game between Army and Notre Dame.

Four games between ranked teams:

#9 Ohio State at #20 Iowa
#16 Virginia Tech at #24 Miami
#13 Arkansas at #21 Mississippi State
#8 Nebraska at #19 Texas A&M

So who does your team play today? What games are you looking forward to?

1. Football at Wrigley Field?
That seems so very wrong. :(

My two teams are playing each other. Stanford & Cal. Go Bears!

3. Wrigley at one time (I think Lambeau has the record now)
Edited on Sat Nov-20-10 12:12 PM by JonLP24
hosted the most NFL games out of any stadium. The Bears and Cardinals used to play games there frequently. Bears more-so. Cardinals played their home games at Comiskey Park. When I've read about those days.. the corner of the endzone was actually inside a dugout, players would often fall in.

Today. The offense for either team will only be using one endzone today out of concerns of players running into the Ivy Wall. Here is a picture.

7. I think Wrigley still has more games, but Lambeau has more seasons
The Packers used to play a few of their home games in Milwaukee every year. They didn't play all their games at Lambeau until the 1990s.

That's funny about the players falling into the end zone when the Bears played there.

It's a pity they can't get the football field positioned in there effectively. There has been a lot of excitement here in Illinois about this game for the past several months. It'd be a shame if they couldn't figure out a way to do it again ...

11. Think about it this way
When the offense comes out of the huddle and sets their offense, their back is facing the ivy wall. If they throw an interception the defense may return it all the way and score where the ivy wall is. Also when the offensive team punts, the other team's kick returner can take it to the ivy wall. On kickoffs the receiving team's back will be facing the ivy wall. Also a fumble return by the defense can be returned to the ivy wall. Basically whoever has the ball will have their back's to the ivy wall. Am I making any sense?

4. oddly enough, Wrigley Field has hosted more NFL games than any stadium in existence
The old Giants Stadium overtook Wrigley a few years ago (since the Jets and Giants both play there), but Wrigley has now outlasted Giants Stadium. But the Bears played at Wrigley from the '20s through 1970 ...

Stanford and Cal should be a good game--tough break for Cal to have to play Oregon and Stanford back-to-back, though.

according to TV guide channel. I think national news is on.

No football for my team. The Men's Basketball team is facing UAB later on. Though not on TV. Should be a good one.

I'll be watching whatever ones are on National TV today. :)

8. so how will the basketball team be this year?
Hopefully better than my team. I'll be surprised if the Sooners win more than eight in the Big 12 this year. I hope I'm wrong, but things just don't look good. They're 3-0, but North Carolina Central took them to overtime.

10. I'm not sure
Edited on Sat Nov-20-10 12:54 PM by JonLP24
they are 0-1 but they lost in Albuquerque to New Mexico (who was a #3 seed that lost to Washington in the tourney last year). UAB is usually a very good Conference-USA team, usually near the top in their conference but they got to play with teams like Memphis and others. And it is a home opener. That will say a lot to me if they can win that one.

I'm glad the AD is going to keep Erickson for his last year of his contract which is next season. I know many fans and local sports commentators will disagree, but he's had so many close games against tough competition a few plays here or there is the difference. Pac-10 officials have admitted they blown the face mask call on Vontaze Burfict on Stanford's final drive. (I didn't see anything like that, except for the announcers complaining about Burfict, because the feed was going out and skipping a lot during Stanford's final drive). Also let's not forget he did split the Pac-10 title a few years ago, USC was first place in the standings. If he doesn't have a successful season next year, they can let him go, seems fair.

Edited on Sat Nov-20-10 02:56 PM by fishwax
Purdue is up 31-28 with about 6 minutes left in the game. Michigan State just got a touchdown and a two-point conversion. Spartans need to win to stay alive in the Big 10 championship picture ...

16. Playoffs begin for the real college teams
No scholarships, national champion determined on the field, Division III playoffs. 32 teams enter, one team emerges and is crowned champion.

The Mighty Linfield Wildcats look to avenge their season-opening 47-42 loss to the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen. The big difference is that this game will be at Maxwell Field, and the visitors from Thousand Oaks might be a smidged chilled by 40-degree weather.

Go Cats!

19. Typical: Linfield falls behind early
Give up a long-strike touchdown pass. But they came back with a touchdown of their own, and lead 7-6 as Cal Lu missed their extra point, which is another hallmark of Linfield losses. So maybe this augurs well.

Linfield has lost twice to Cal Lu, once in 1978 when they blew a 28-10 lead in the fourth quarter, and the first game of this year when they blew a 28-7 lead. It's nail-biting time.

Edited on Sat Nov-20-10 03:53 PM by JonLP24
Is Illinois throwing the kickoff?

Other rules under consideration include the fire hydrant at the corner of Elm & Main is out of bounds; each school will be responsible for bringing extra footballs because if one goes into Old Man Johnson’s garden you cannot go after it because he’ll tell your parents you trampled his tomato plants whether you did or not; all kickoffs will be thrown; five-Mississippi pass rushes on first and second down; if any player’s mom hollers for him during the course of the game, he will be permitted to re-enter the game after he’s finished cleaning his room; and oncoming traffic has the right of way and play will stop, except on fourth down when you’re on your own.

47. A&M beats Nebraska 9-6 ... that complicates the Big 12 division races
Nebraska could have clinched the north division title with a win today, but now they need to either beat Colorado or have Missouri lose to Kansas next week. Colorado has won two in a row and would be bowl eligible if they can beat Nebraska.

Meanwhile, Texas A&M winning keeps alive the possibility of a 3-way tie in the south. If A&M had lost, then the OU-OSU game next week would be for the division title.

Truthfully, it probably still is: if OSU wins, they win the division outright; if OU wins and A&M loses to Texas, then OU wins the division via a tie-breaker over OSU; if OU wins and A&M beats Texas, then there will be a three-way tie for the south, and because each team would be 1-1 against the other two teams and they would all have the same record against the south, it would come down to BCS ranking, which would likely favor Oklahoma. So, most likely, next week's bedlam game is for the Big 12 South title.

Dear Hubby's Oklahoma Aggies have been kicking ass lately.

He has a black and orange fan banner and we hang it outside the front door on game day, just to confuse the natives (we live in Texas).

I get tired of the same old flags people fly. It's either the US flag or the "Chile flag" (sarcasm) and the Stars n Bars in little stickers on pickups, only rarely will people fly a regular Confederate flag.
