Poll question: It's not Thanksgiving without...

As I write this, while waiting for someone to write the newspaper, my butt is straight above tens of thousands of grocery store circulars--all of which say "It Wouldn't Be Thanksgiving Without..." and name some product that's supposedly traditional to eat on Thanksgiving.

So...for you, it wouldn't be Thanksgiving without:

Instead of cooking the stuffing inside of the turkey, she uses muffin tins. Every little portion is nice and crunchy, so nobody has to fight over the bits on the outside. Mmm. :)

I'm going to do that this year. I always stuff the bird and have more in a casserole dish but this is a really neat and novel idea.

10. Turkey is the only thing I can count on

If we have Turkey Day with hubby's family, it is usually overdone and dry, with uninspiring unspiced flavorless white bread stuffing, one of those horrid sweet potato casseroles with marshmallow topping, broccoli smashed to a pulp, and smushy white rolls. Maybe that is why they fall all over themselves for my pecan pies, which are pretty good, even if I do say so myself.

If we have it at Mom's or my sister's the turkey is better but they vary the rest of the menu so I never know what to expect. Usually one bro-in-law makes turnip greens, which I hate (all greens, not just his). Mom insists on baking cookies and pies, and she's the one who taught me to bake, so hers are pretty darn good.

This year we're going to hubby's family for Turkey Day - I'm buying my own and roasting it Friday so we can have good turkey and lots of leftovers! I'm planning on gravy &stuffing with lots of herbs, onions, celery and mushrooms, winter squash cooked just until barely tender, green beans, and key lime pie.

I remember my first holiday alone - Thanksgiving in the dorm. I couldn't get a ride home for the weekend, so I volunteered to work and got overtime pay for the entire four days. I bought a rock cornish game hen, a small bag of stuffing, green beans and mushroom soup. Baked the hen and stuffing in the dorm broiler over, heated the beans and mushroom soup(not together, the soup was my gravy) on the hot plate and Voila! Mini-Turkey Day!

Now that we often have Thanksgiving at our house, I make chestnut stuffing with apples, french bread, sage, onions, etc. and some eggs and bake it. It's so, so good and very moist.



We got an organic turkey last year and this year, and that cooked fairly well. It's usually fairly moist.

20. Oh! I have roasted chestnuts in the freezer!

Maybe I should add them to the stuffing. Hubby said he wants nuts in my stuffing this year, but I usually don't like the consistency. The roasted chestnuts (bought from a local grower) got a little too done, but if I mash them up and mix them in, they will give flavor and not have the lumpy consistency I've disliked with walnut stuffing.

Thanks for the idea! I like onions, celery and mushrooms in my stuffing, along with whatever herbs strike my fancy - probably sage, thyme and marjoram, maybe a little rubbed rosemary. If I can get to the store that sells rye flour, I might back a loaf of rye, as well as the whole wheat/spelt/barley bread I have been baking. Then I can take some of each loaf to make the stuffing. I like the combination of breads, not just one kind.

Hubby's Mom is an indifferent cook. His father had lots of food allergies, so she could never be adventurous. And her father worked for General Mills so she had no incentive to be a good cook.

Chestnuts are kind of a pain to peel, but it's worth it for the taste. I never have enough left to freeze though! :D

I got the main shells off, but they just mushed when I tried to wipe the inner coat off as suggested. I figure that little bitter flavor that coat has will get hidden in the stuffing - or at least I hope it will.

14. Godzilla

Many years ago, a TV station in New Jersey used to show a marathon of old Godzilla movies on Thanksgiving Day. The holiday wouldn't have been complete without a giant lizard destroying Tokyo or something.

Now we have Quorn "turkey" for those of us who are vegetarians in the family. Probably tastes about the same as Godzilla. ;)
