8. Can I have a brief explanation of the premise?

I've never really followed zombie lore and don't know the premise of this comic book series -- what happened? A plague got loose? How? No one is immune? Some people didn't get sick? Did everyone who got sick become a zombie? How did the people who didn't get sick escape such a plague? I'm probably mixing my understanding up with Steven King's The Stand, where most people died but some had immunity...

Anyone feel like giving me a bit of a primer?
