Why I Hate The Movie, "The Social Network"

So, I caught the movie, "The Social Network", and I hated it. Here's why. It's not because of the acting, the writing, or the direction, which were all top notch. The lead actor is tremendous, and that kid has a great future as an actor.

I hated the movie because of the subject matter. To me, the whole movie is nothing more than an orgy of narcissism, and just how self-centered our society has become. Look, Facebook was nothing new. Friendster already existed long before Facebook, and there have been other online message boards from CompuServe to AOL to MySpace to Twitter, etc. These things come and go.

To devote a motion picture to the development of Facebook as if it were some kind of cure for a horrible disease seems to be overly self indulgent when in reality it's nothing more than another, fancier message board.

Quite the opposite. What made you think it was pro-Facebook?

5. The Movie Wants Us To Believe that Facebook Is Some Sort of Revolutionary Service

When in reality, it was a ripoff of Friendster. In addition, Facebook is really nothing more than a personalized message board. There's nothing revolutionary or movie-worthy about it.

I'm not a Facebook fan, but I don't agree that it's not a movie-worthy subject. I think the film is more about the age of the social network, which Facebook is dominating, than about Facebook itself. It's not viewed as a particularly positive development either.

When Facebook goes public next year it will probably have a market value greater than the Ford Motor Company.

I don't care for Facebook, and I don't use it, but I do see how the story of it's inception (by college kids nonetheless) could be worthy of a movie.

4. At One Point, AOL and Yahoo Had The Highest Market Valuation for All Companies As Well

So, this story is nothing new. Also, the concept of a social networking site did not begin with Facebook. Friendster was around in 1999, but there's no movie about it.

The only way this story qualifies as a movie is if you believe in the narcissism that Harvard and the Ivy League sell to their grads.

14. I saw the movie and thought it was interesting. As far as

Facebook goes, I'm on it but it creeped me out to find out that almost all of the kids I grew up w/are redneck, over-the-top "christian" republicans. I had to hide so many friggin' threads but before I did it left a really bad taste in my mouth. Most of my close friends now aren't on it.
