Walking Dead last night (spoilers)
great show last night - very intense, and some unexpected twists. Like, the showdown with the "gang" in Atlanta, and then the zombie attack at night. I thought the wife-beater guy was going to be around for longer...

1. From what I know from the comics...
Edited on Mon Nov-22-10 01:26 PM by Lucian
don't get used to characters. They're not afraid to kill them off. But yeah, the zombie attack at the end was awesome. From what it looks like in the previews for next week's episode, it looks like the group goes back to the nursing home, but the gang won't let them in for some reason. I guess we'll have to wait and see...

2. I thought for sure
the wife beater guy would be around just to cause trouble for the group.

3. looks like Merle will be the one to fill that role
Notice that he hasn't appeared once since the second episode but his presence has been felt in each episode since. When Amy announced she was going to the bathroom, I was waiting for Merle to grab her, not for the zombies to attack.

5. you know what
I think I was expecting that as well - Merle to grab her.

13. Did the older guy with the watch get eaten?
I couldn't tell at the end.

4. Yeah I thought that too.
But that zombie showed him.

I wonder what happened to that guy's brother...the one who sawed his hand off to escape?

I guess we'll find out...

6. That ending was very intense, indeed
And that brief story the guy who was digging grave-like holes (Jim?) told of his family's fate was both heartbreaking and disturbing.

I think last night's episode gave the best glimpse into what the show's potential may be.

One thing's been gnawing at me, though, so to speak:

Has the main character (the cop) ever asked anyone to tell him the backstory of how the zombies came to be?

I don't remember him asking the black guy and his son in the first episode...maybe I missed it, though.

If he hasn't, that seems odd to me. That would've been one of the first things I'd ask someone.

7. Yeah I find that kind of odd also.
I don't remember if someone told the cop the backstory. But that would be the very first thing I'd ask.

I know in 28 Days Later, when the guy awoke from a coma, he found those two survivors and they explained to him how the zombies came to be (with the Rage virus). Hmmm...

9. I think I had asked that a few weeks back on DU
thinking maybe a missed a piece or a special preview/pilot or something.

However, I guess one of the premises of many zombie apocalypses is that the reason is never truly given - it just happens.

10. I'd be ok with not knowing, it's just weird that the cop hasn't asked
We really don't know why the zombies are attacking in Night of the Living Dead and I think that adds to the creepiness, but we are given hints from talking heads on news broadcasts as to what may be the cause.

It just doesn't make sense that the cop hasn't asked anyone, even his wife, about it.

11. That's one of many plot holes that bother me about this show...
another was just why he rode that horse right into the middle of Zombietown when it was pretty damn obvious Atlanta was not the haven he thought it would be.

(And where was all the blood around the empty handcuffs?)

12. I think one aspect of zombie apocalypse movies
Edited on Tue Nov-23-10 09:45 AM by NewJeffCT
is that the zombies just happen and there is often no explanation - Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, etc.

And, I think Rick thought he was fine when he was on horseback, as he'd seen only small groups of zombies and not the huge throng he saw when he rounded that street corner and figured the horse was enough to outrun just about anything.

I wonder who was piloting the helicopter, though, from that first episode.

16. The only zombie movie that explains the epidemic was "28 Days Later"
with the whole Rage virus and chimpanzee-to-human contamination through bites.

24. I liked it until the end
but, I don't want to spoil it for you. I think they're going to try to make a prequel to 'I Am Legend' that covers the 3 years between the start of the virus and when the recent movie starts.

25. They explained the lack of blood - tourniquet.
That was part of little brother's mumbling spiel before he launched into how tough Merle is - "must have used his belt."

15. The old blcak guy kind of explained it when he was talking about how the fever took his wife and
then she turned into a zombie. It kind of explained it.

What I don't get is if Merle had a hacksaw - why did he cut off his hand and not just saw through the chain on the hand cuffs?

I wonder if this is just in the US or the entire world?

Either way - Great Show

18. good question on Merle
maybe he couldn't reach the hacksaw and just pulled hard enough to rip off the hand? (ouch!!)

Also I think most zombie apocalypse movies assume it's the world, unless it's stated otherwise (like 28 Days Later)

All will be revealed in good time I guess. Quickly becoming one my don't miss shows.

21. Rick mentioned that the blade was probably too dull
Edited on Tue Nov-23-10 04:07 PM by AllenVanAllen

to cut through the cuffs. What they did miss is, it would have been much easier to cut through the "all thread" pipe brace the cuffs were attached to. Usually the metal that stuff is made of is pretty malleable and easy to cut through, even with a dull hacksaw blade.

I love this show BTW.

27. Not sure, but I think most handcuffs are tempered steel
I think tempered steel is too hard to cut through with a hacksaw.

And agreed, I like this show a lot. It's available on Amazon, all the current episodes, as they are shown. You can upload Amazon's player and watch them there.

The Rick-Lori-Shane triangle is sort of interesting. And I keep wondering what happened to Morgan and Duane.

29. Is the Rick-Lori-Shane thing really a triangle?
Lori & Shane were together, seemingly, because Lori thought Rick was dead and, in the horror of the world falling apart around them, she sought comfort in another man's arms. Now, she seems to be firmly back with Rick and not too happy that Shane had said he was dead.

Of course, if Shane got her pregnant while they were together, it could be interesting.

But, I hope we at least find out Morgan & Duane's fate - did they manage to escape? Or, were they overrun once he started shooting? The zombies are not totally mindless - they've turned door handles and climbed fences, and one of them used a large stone to try to break a window.
