goodlordgawdamighty - installing windows98
on a corrupted 95 computer. I was stuck in DOS for a long while, but finally got the bastard to recognize it has a d drive.

Loaded 98, and now it can't find the driver for connecting to the internet. I have downloaded many drivers, and it won't take any of them. This is a compaq 4504.

I think I should throw it out the window, but it's not mine.

any ideas?

3. Well, you could always just buy another one off eBay
but shipping will cost about the same as the computer itself...

4. Hey!
Seventy five bucks is hard to come by for this person!

I think I'll just replace it with something I can find and get it over with.

I did learn quite a bit about what not to do, though!

5. Explain things for the fool here.
Did you crash it out and reformat? Is this an upgrade 98 or a clean install 98?

I don't know what compaq 4504 means. Pentium I? Give me the RAM, CPU speed, hard drive size.

Did you go to Fat 32?

Is there a Zip drive?

Be a little more specific before you throw it out the window.

And what on God's earth did you mean by "corrupted?"

6. it lost the ability to find the internet
then it lost the ability to find damn near anything.

windows 95

I did a clean install. Supposedly, the registry was overwritten with 98.

It's a Compaq Presario 4504

No fat32 - I was hesitant to attempt that when it wouldn't even go out of DOS and couldn't read a cd rom drive.

zip - yes

Corrupted - it can't seem to find necessary dll files, even though it was a clean install. I'm not sure what else to call it.

7. Did you unplug the zip drive before you did the install?

Win 98 has a problem reading a Zip drive on a clean install.

Drove me screaming out of my mind until I went into the machine and unplugged the zip. Installed like a dream. THEN I went back and plugged the zip back in, rebooted and let the pc recognize it.

They never mention that the zip drive will screw you over.

If your hard drive is over 2Gb, I suggest you start over, reformat, and do the Fat 32 partitions.

9. Here's the Compaq site for downloading your drivers

You can also go to this second site to download a utility for identifying your specific network card. It's freeware, and it works extremely well. Once you've identified the hardware, tracking the software drivers should be easier. http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html

10. thanks, but
the drivers for this beast no longer seem to exist!

I'm looking for a modem driver, but the ones I install don't work, and the older ones can't be found anymore!

I think the window in the best place to throw it. It is definitely a time consuming headache!
