I'm going to go work for the salvation army tomorrow.
I signed up to be a bell ringer this year because I needed a little exra money. They called me today and said to come tomorrow. I know I have to say god bless you even though I am not a christian but I am ok with that as it is a christian organization. Wish me well. :)

I do mean that, they fund some good works for the poor and the needy. More need this year than ever.

Expect to get flamed for it here though, from people you never expected it from. The Salvation Army is, as I'm sure you're aware, rather homophobic. Good works and a needed job be damned.

6. You have to say "God Bless You"? They don't say that here.
Enjoy yourself!

7. Best of luck!
I was tempted also, when I saw bell ringers are making more than I do at my (shitty) retail job.

8. Although they have a reputation for being homophobic, I did not find them to be so
when I volunteered in one of their programs for street kids in Portland.

In fact, they tried to talk sense into parents who had thrown their kids out of the house for being gay, and I never saw them discriminate against or disparage any of the GLBT kids.

13. I agree that the SA does not seem blatantly anti-gay.
I did a stint as a student nurse at a Salvation Army alcohol rehabilitation facility. The program was a thirty day residential program for men only. We got to know the patients well through group therapy and other interactions.

There were gays in the program, and I did not detect any bad feelings toward them.

The facility had a rule that no patient could enter the room of another. This may have been to prevent fraternization, but I did not note any open animosity in the treatment of the gay patients.

9. Long as you know who you're working for, more power to you.
I have huge issues with them.

But I also know a few people, one of them a very close relative, who might be dead today if it weren't for their drug-rehab program.

Hey, you need the job, you take the job.

11. One good thing about the SA around here, is that when you get burned out
of a home, they are usually there that first night or two before any services are able to help you. They give you clothes, blankets, a little bit of $$ and a place to stay right away.
