I was in Cecilia's solo band (we performed her song compositions outside of AOTO), and she was the lead vocalist in my totally obscure art/rock/experimental band called Pendu Femelle, late-80s into the early 90s.

Cecilia Plus Minus was "goth" before I ever heard of it, but me and the band were not "goth" at all, which led to some interesting moments with her primarily "goth"-populated audiences.

Unfortunately, Cecilia passed away in early 09 from a long undiagnosed (or misdignosed), until it was too late, rare and deadly mystery disorder.

Had she been correctly diagnosed a decade earlier, she might still be around...

13. I used to see and talk to El Duce at the old Cathay de Grande...

...in Hollywood, CA, back in the early eighties.

My band played there numerous times back then, and Duce would often be hanging out. He had a set of Camco drums, like me, so we would talk drums.

Don Bolles (Germs, 45 Grave, Celebrity Skin, Fancy Space People), often did the sound for the Cathay. In retrospect, it was a great place, but, at the time, it just seemed like another dive.

16. One was called The Hundredth Monkey...

...and the one before that (and which still exists, at least as a recording project), Benedict Arnold & The Traitors, both of which played at the Cathay, although the Monkey played there much more than the Traitors.

I'm still flailing away, just played a live show in Costa Mesa last Saturday with a band consisting of the original guitarist from the Traitors (which started in late 1979), who is now playing bass and singing, along with his 28 year old son, who is the lead guitarist, and I'm the drummer.

Lastly, I'm working with the current Traitors' guitarist on another project called "Green Sparkle Frog," which I hope will be releasing a CD by the end of the year/early 2011. It's all happy, melodic, rock/pop with a little country edge, or something like that.

...on my drive back to Los Angeles, from the truly depressing Bible Belt-buckle hellhole called Springfield, MO.*

Albuquerque...? I think I stopped there overnight at some corporate chain hotel next to the interstate. Wish I could see the real Albuquerque, where you live.

As far as good places to play, Los Angeles and the surrounding urban jungle sprawl ain't necessarily Heaven, although there is no lack of places to play, for better or worse. This little strip mall rathole in Costa Mesa the other night actually had a good vibe, and despite heavy rain through the day, there was a good crowd on hand for my first live gig with this particular band. Plus, we actually got paid!

Most of the stuff (actually, not most, ALL), of the stuff I've been involved with in L.A. since 1978 has been all original, diy/indie label, underground, "non-commercial," non-cover tunes (except for the occasional one or two for fun), which is, needless to say, a hard sell.

I had one project get to a Columbia Records development deal, with Sandy Perlman (sp? Blue Oyster Cult producer), producing...but our singer (not Cecilia Plus Minus, somebody else) could not satisfactorily finish her vocals on the demo recordings, and the band dissolved rapidly thereafter. That was 1995, and I was already too old to be doing this, now it's fuckin ridiculous, no?

*Long story, won't bore ya with it, and no offense about that "hellhole" thing to Springfieldians, if there are any actual humans living there, I'm kidding, of course. But I won't be going to Springfield MO anytime soon.

What a great singer, and a great band....I just posted this song on facebook a couple of weeks ago suggesting/imploring one of my female vocalist fiends to learn it, and also recently watched Cold Blood's spellbinding performance at the closing of the Fillmore West show (shows?). Lydia Pense was at one of the casinos here a couple of years ago but I wasn't able to go. Another old sax player buddy of mine (Rick Metz; based out of Reno) has played with her on occasion over the years, and says she's still "got it".
