In Fair Oaks Village, chickens regularly rule the roost, and on Saturday an estimated 15,000 people turned out to celebrate the fifth annual Fair Oaks Chicken Festival.
"It's rocking," said Todd Sebastian, assistant administrator of the Fair Oaks Recreation and Park District. "We're all here to celebrate the chickens. It's a way of life here."
As neighboring cities wrestle with the great backyard chicken debate – whether to allow urban residents to keep chickens in their yards – Fair Oaks Village has long embraced its most famous residents, who earned national recognition for their brazen antics.
"When they're crossing the street, they take their time," said village resident Jennifer O'Brien, a chicken fan. "They're very accustomed to people."
Said Sebastian, "You occasionally see people honking at chickens in the road, but they just ignore them. The chickens definitely own the road here."
If only they would stay outside, added shop owner Cynthia Cockrill. She's found them nesting in floral arrangements and hiding under a buffet inside her home store, Simpler Times.
"You have to be really alert all the time," she said. "They come over the threshold and cackle. But overall, they're good chickens. I really enjoy them. They're part of our ambience."
Chicken supporters outside Fair Oaks would like to bring egg layers to their neighborhoods, too.
