Help? LOUD, intermittent 'chirp' in living room, maybe in closet.

Don't know what. DID have bat in apartment few months ago, summer time, when door had been ajar. Autumn now, 50-ish out. Front door open late afternoon for a bit, tho 'screen' door closed.

Closet door CLOSED!

We had one in the basement that made an irritating loud chirping sound for a couple of weeks until he was eventually found, 'escorted' out, and deposited some distance away.

juice, or a portable phone chirps too. I've been known to pocket them and then forget they're in the pocket and hang the coat up.

Nothing really dangerous of the flying or furry or scurrying kind that chirps comes to mind.

Prolly nothing 'dangerous,' but had really unpleasant couple hours here, few months ago, with bat flying to and fro until I 'persuaded' it outside.

Just found this:

Turn off all but one hall light, open all the doors and windowwws wide, put on a long coat (or a blanket over yourself) and quickly open the door and get out of the way,

if it is a bat, it should be able to use its echolocation to get out one of the open doors or windows.

27. Thanks, Ts; that's what I did few months ago, when a relative

(or maybe this one???) was here, flying around, awakened me. Summer. Had to 'bat' it out; didn't turn all lights off.

This one is in closed closet, and I'm not going there now! HOPE to have a friend/landlady help me deal with it tomorrow (or let it stay where it is until Day-After-Thanksgiving guests arrive, freak out my daughters and test their beaux! Hey, that's a good idea, kind of like Michelle Robinson did, asked her brother to play basketball w Obama to see what kind of guy he was!)

28. Yep, many harmless critters make folks uncomfortable. I guess

bats are totally harmless because some folks try to handle them after catching them, and they can have rabies. When I've heard the bats squeaks I wouldn't call it a chirp, but I suppose muffled in a closet it could. In open air, backyard, the squeak sounds like a short scream almost. Of course "chirp" is also a subjective description. But I've never heard of a real bat (as opposed to movie dramas) attacking human. If you think it's another bat, and it could be, then wait till late tomorrow afternoon when you can open up the house for a few and open the closet then using a broom or something long and gentle, nudge it out of the closet and out the door.

I hope it gets resolved for you safely and calmly by tomorrow.

25. Doesn't sound like a cricket, and I don't know how it could have gotten in.

Somehow one did, a few months ago, when a door was left slightly ajar, briefly.

I know its not here to freak me out, but 'earlier' one was a real pain, as it was so unpredictable. Took quite a while to get it out, swatting/batting with broom toward open door.

This one started chirping again at about 1:00, and has ceased, again.

30. Is there any possibility you have a breach from the attic/roof to the closet

ceiling that might be allowing them into the closet directly? I know we had a bit of problem in the opposite direction with field mice getting in the house from the crawlspace because one of the heating/AC duct joints got disconnected and one of the floor vent covers was just bent a tiny bit, but enough for those tiny and adorable critters to get in. I'm not fond of mice in the house, but truly these tiny little mice are quite cute, it was really hard to put the snap traps out. After the first couple (even though we found the problem, we already had a family living in the coat closet before we realized they had moved in), anyway, after the first couple got snapped, I switched to a humane trap and let them go outside.

This apt. was probably converted from something, but surely not roof-top! One window AC unit, and base-board heating. Will discuss w landlady for ideas, and study whatever's in the closet. MAY be some pipes in there.

They have batteries that wear out ( the box thingie in your closet- its a BIG battery,the size of a motorcycle battery), and the chirp is similar to a smoke detector need battery chirp.

I think it's either escaped or deceased, as it chirped a few times yesterday afternoon, then stopped. SO, daughters' beaux visiting tomorrow, and I'll ask them to do a dead-bat search, as price of Day After Thanksgiving Dinner!

46. I went through something like this last year.

It was more of a high pitched hum, like I suddenly got tinnitus, I was home alone and going crazy trying to figure out what it was. I swear it sounded like it was emanating for dead center of my kitchen - hanging midair. Freaked me out. I cut off all the circuits so there was no power in the house thinking maybe it was coming from the chandelier. Cutting off the power didn't shut it off.

After about three hours, the husband came home and he could hear it too, which was a relief. He grabbed a wrapping paper tube and put that to his ear and he also heard it coming from midair in the kitchen - then he went around all the cabinets using it like a stethoscope. I would have mocked him but he is an engineer who does acoustics stuff for an army R&D center.

Turned out to be a meat thermometer in a drawer that was losing its battery power. We have a parabola shaped chandelier in the kitchen, it was redirecting the sound waves so they sounded like they were coming from a few feet underneath it.

Anyway - I doubt yours is a meat thermometer, but it might be worth wandering around the perimeter of your living room with a wrapping paper tube to your ear.

but these were short, intermittent 'chirps,' no hum, separated by 30 seconds or more. They have ceased; read my more recent posts. Will ask friends to look for deceased bat in closet tomorrow!
