What were your best clubbing days?
Mine were definitely between Chicago, London, Paris, and Seville (as a grad student I had the privilege of traveling much). Even Albuquerque had an underground scene. I had girl friend at the time who was also into the explosion of house/techno etc.

Deep House, trance techno and drum and bass were my preferred genres. Monday night at the Red Dog in Chicago were legendary, Mark Grant was the DJ then. So were nights at the Rex in Paris.

I also loved the punk scene in SoCal in the late 70s and early 80s, but that's another story.

Armadillo world Headquarters, Soap Creek Saloon, Antones, Continental Club, Backstage, Split Rail and a host of other famous, infamous and not so famous dives.
Working at the 'Dillo pretty much got you in free at all the other places.

26. I don't know how deep your exposure is to techno,
but I agree that most of the commercial stuff, as with other music genres, is shit.

We, my friends and I, were deep into the underground side, whose DJs were making some money and building fan bases globally, but were still marginal figures in the industry.

The early Detroit techno--Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Carl Craig--some of the most beautiful and original music I have ever heard.

The worst show, though of that last clubbing period of my life, was a techno show in some Paris suburb that my girlfriend and I spent 3 hours finding. We walked in and stayed about 3 minutes. It was like techno headbanging, not the ethereal trance techno.

Graham's Central Station in SA was one of the best clubs I've been to.

I like having a mix of classic rock, hair bands, some SBI bands, some rap, and the occasional country song when I'm out. Never really went for the techno scene.

Ike and Tina Turner, Steppenwolf, Archie Bell and the Drells, Clarence Carter and Exile, long before 'I Want to Kiss You All Over' days. Missed CCR when they played, also had Nat King Cole, Jerry Lee Louis, Little Richard and Tony Bennet. The 'Club' was an Oasis in the Bible Belt . Saw Bowie play in a small club in Berlin after Ziggy, maybe '74 or '75 with less than a hundred people in the joint.

23. Sadly, mine were from my military days
Back in the 80s, alcohol use was almost encouraged in the Air Force. On Friday nights, when the flight line duties were done, you're attendance at the Officers Club bar was pretty much expected.

I do vaguely remember having some pretty good times there. Lots of liar's dice, dollar bill and carrier landings on the bar.

Oh, to be young and immature again!

I was playing under my own name at the time. Rene Bouchard. If you were at my show, I'd be amazed. There's a reason I'm no longer a working musician.

Later, I had a band called porridge. My last working project was a duo with guitarist David Romanelli.

I haven't played out in over 10 years.

I played mostly in Austin, Sedona, and New York.

You can find more stuff here: http://rbouchard.viviti.com/music

I played in a few different clubs the year I lived there. Cactus Cafe was one. There were a couple others I can't remember, but I might if I heard the names. Continental? And I worked the graveyard shift at Kerbey Lane South. Austin was a good year, but I had to get out of there. It was so easy to be so laid back there. Plus, one of my friends started getting into H and I didn't want to watch my scene degenerate like that. I couldn't save her. I had to go.

Continental Club, La Zona Rosan or Emo's maybe? I live in San Antonio and would spend my weekends in Austin. It's so different there now although still laid back; the area where the Liberty Lunch sat is now a business park w/office buildings, quite nice but makes me sad. I drove up a month or so ago to see Pavement at Sam's Burger Joint.

It was like the whole town was in heat. Some places revved up to 4-for-1 happy hours, before the law stepped in and put an end to it (think about hitting the road with 4 vodka martini's under your belt). It was a glorious time and place; seems like so long ago......

My friend and I wound up at this place called The Detroit Bar. And we both walked in and realized this place was like a scene from a really horrible trance music video and were like "fuck!!!!".

As for best - Detroit has an awesome scene (I've been to bars in Detroit that were better than the Detroit Bar), I had a great time in Boston, New York, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. And I love going to downtown Fullerton (my hometown) and going bar-hopping there.

38. Louisville, Kentucky's The Connection in the early 90's.
The Connection was a gay club, and I'm straight, but I always had a wonderful time there. I used to go with not just one or two friends, but a whole crowd of people from Louisville's St. Mathews District theater types. I was in the Army at the time. I was their pet gay-friendly soldier, a rarity at the time. (I'm so glad to see that the majority of service members today have no problem serving with gay troops.)

Anyway, The Connection was an amazing place. Two dance floors, a regular bar, a piano bar, a cabaret, and a sort-of beer garden.

On occasion, I used to go with just one other friend, a lovely lesbian named Brandi. We sat together so the straight guys would leave her alone, and the gay guys would leave me alone. (For me, it was not about being approached, it was about having to turn the guys down.)

Great times, and I'll never forget Summer Hurricane and Le Boy la Femmes. :applause:

43. Clubbing, at least when I last did it, was different from going out.
Edited on Sun Nov-28-10 03:20 PM by mix
Clubbing for me and my friends at the time, from about '92-2000, meant a pre-party at someone's apartment around midnight, getting to the club, usually some temporary nondescript location around 1 or 2am (sometimes it was some big famous place too), dancing until dawn and on occasion going somewhere else to chill, straggling home around noon. It didn't always happened that way, but that was its platonic form.

It was a very happy and creative moment in music.
