Screw Doctor's Orders: I ate Thanksgiving Dinner anyway.
I hope you guys had / are having a good day. Kind of quiet here; just us and a few friends, but I defied Doctor's Orders about only eating slurried food from a blender (I still have the stabilizing wires in my teeth) and actually ate some stuff rather than drinking it (gravy is an excellent, and tasty lubricant). The only exception was the Green Bean Casserole, which I did have to puree but it tasted damn good anyway.

But hey, you know how I try to find the good in ANY situation - and this time it works out that once I get the wires out of my teeth (in two weeks), they'll be straighter and better-aligned than they ever were. Even though I have five fewer teeth than before. No matter, that; I can get some false teeth. (Say, why is it that they call them 'false' teeth when they never rot or hurt or break or fall out like 'real'teeth do?)

Anyway, all yall enjoy what's left of your day.

1. Hi Redstone...
My youngest sis had a broken jaw & it was wired shut for about 6 weeks... hope you're 100% soon.

6. Six WEEKS? AAARGH! at least my jaw is unwired so I can cheat; I cannot
imagine the misery of having a jaw wired shut for a month and a half (I only had that for a week and a half).

If they hadn't clipped the vertical (jaw-closing) wires last week, I'm afraid I'd have to have done it myself. (I have a sordid history of removing my own casts, stitches, catheters, etc when they got too annoying. Wonder why doctors hate me?)

Hey, did I see a post from you that your Thanksgiving wasn't going too well? If so, I certainly hope it's improved for you. You're one of the good ones, and deserve to be happy.

8. Yeah. She was hit by a pick-up while riding her scooter...
Edited on Thu Nov-25-10 08:51 PM by Haole Girl
went chin first into the windshield. Funny (but not so funny) the way she tells the story. The guy in the ambulance remembered her from a previous scooter accident. He said, "Hey, haven't I seen you before?"

She also told me that she hoped the guy who hit her had nightmares of it the rest of his life.

I'm ok Redstone. Think I just didn't prepare myself, mentally, for today (though, some things are impossible to prepare oneself for). Thanks.

9. I've had ambulance / ER people remember me. It's enjoyable once, maybe
twice, but not so after that.

I've been telling myself I need to slow down on getting hurt for the better part of forty years now...maybe it's time to just do so instead of just thinking about it; I'm running out of parts that have never been broken. Such as the jaw; it's always escaped before but I got it in six places this time.

I know that's a drag, I'm glad you've got an excellent coping mechanism going there.

7. Yeah, if you have the right attitude you can puree stuff and enjoy the fact
that it still tastes the same, even though the texture is gone.

I highly recommend mushroom soup, bacon, ham, a hard-boiled egg, and Cheddar cheese pureed together. With lots of black pepper.

Not bad at all.

I was thinking about you last night, wondering if you were going to be able to eat today!

4. Thank you for thinking of me, my friend:
I did eat more than I was supposed to be able to (but I always do more of anything than I'm supposed to be able to; it's fun to consistently confound the experts).

Best meal I've had in about three weeks, no matter that it made my jaw hurt to eat it. Some ends are indeed worth the means.

I'm happy. Hope you are, too, I really do.

5. I'm a dedicated practicioner of the "I know it's bad for me BUT..." philosophy...

...though today it's much MUCH rarer than it used to be.

.
.
Rare, in fact. Kinda sad.
.
.

But I'm glad you went for it and enjoyed it, despite the
soreness it caused. Heck, that's why they used to call
them "hangovers" ("Do they still?" he wistfully asked.)

Though it's now educated and calculated compared to the
old "hold my beer and watch THIS" attitude... it's still
good. REAL good.

12. Is there such a thing as a "foodover?" If so, I'm having one now. Not that
I dislike it; it's actually quite pleasant to have eaten more in a day than I have in a year.

I think it's time to go scrounge some leftovers.

10. One must always consider what constitutes "quality of life."

11. Indeed. Having to eat "blenderized" food sure beats the hell out of
having to be fed through a tube in a hospital, like many people in the world did today. My "quality of life" looks pretty damn good in comparison, which is why you didn't see any complaining in my post.

Through all the troubles I've had in my life, I've reminded myself every single morning about what a fortunate son of a bitch I reall am; even if only for the reason that I woke up that day, and many, many people did not.

Remember the old saying "If I couldn't laugh, I'd cry?"

I'll take the laugh option.

13. My dear Redstone!
How good to hear you're doing well, and defying your doctors into the bargain!

I'm sure your teeth will look great, but oh what a price to pay to get them like this!

We had a lovely day, although it was sandwiched between two long (90 minutes plus) drives. Drove up to Oxnard, to some almost relatives who live right on the beach. Stunning views of the Channel Islands, and the sunset was wonderful.

Also great was the company and the food! I'm glad to be home now, though...

You take care, you hear?

14. Yes, if you drive to spend Thanksgiving with relatives, you know it's
been a good day if you arrive home still stuffed and exhausted.

And you'll be taking tomorrow off to futher recover, I presume. Write a poem or two if you must, but rest otherwise.

And I have a paper to write for my English class, plus laundry!

I'm planning to stay home and work at my own speed!

17. Cool, the way you hang onto that positive attitude.
I wish you would consider implants as replacement for those lost teeth. Thanks for the Thanksgiving report. I'd been thinking about you today, wondering how you and your wired-shut mouth got along together on turkey day. Two weeks to go now, yay!

21. Thanks, but no thanks. I know two people (one of them my wife) who went
the implant route, and they both had an utterly miserable time of it.

All the teeth I knocked out (and the ones I lost in the past from breakage) have surviving teeth on either side, so clip-on bridgework should be easy to get done and to live with.

(Plus, I think my health insurance will pay for bridgework because I lost the teeth through an accident rather than neglect, but I doubt they'd cover the $5K a pop for implants.)

Thanks for the thought, though.

23. Redstone - we were doing the rebellious thing too!
Just picked S.O. up at Abington Hospital on Thursday morning, and they wanted him to eat soup post-gallbladder removal.

Boston Market provided us a nice substitute for the planned feast at his sister's house, and damned if S.O. didn't eat a little of everything, without suffering any ill effects.

My elderly dad was able to get downstairs and join us at the table, so it turned out to be a very Thankful Thanksgiving.

Hope your teeth are back in business soon!
