http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/rabid-otter-west-of-boca-raton-will-probably-1081961.htmlAn otter attacked a dog Nov. 18 and two people Nov. 21 in the Boca Chase development west of U.S. 441 between Clint Moore and Yamato roads. On Wednesday, a 19-year-old man was attacked by an otter that came out of a canal in the back yard of his Southwind Lakes home near Yamato Road and 441.
The attacks have received attention from national media outlets such as CNN, and the most recent attack, which was caught on video, has received more than 50,000 views on YouTube.
If the otter is not dead already, it should be soon, according to Capt. David Walesky, operations manager for Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. Although there is no specific data for otters with rabies, an otter with the disease should only live about one week, he said.
Raccoons with rabies can live up to 20 days, but most are dead within a week, and dogs and cats can live up to about 10 days, with most dead within three days.
