Here's the story. I wrecked my truck a couple weeks ago and have since replaced it. Selling the scrap I was originally offered $400. Then one of the guys working at the shop it was at offered me $900. I called the scrap yard back to tell them and he immediately offered me $1000 for a wrecked 1999 S-10. Now I'm curious, in part because the scrapper said "ok, if they want to play that game I'll give you $1000." So I call my mechanic back and it turns out the scrapper was trying to sell him my truck for $1400. Title in hand I sold it to my mechanic for $900 dollars. I don't like people playing those sorts of games. So I'm $100 less rich, but my integrity is intact. IMHO anyway.

I'd rather die financially destitute than morally bankrupt.

Just kidding! I think you did a very honorable thing. You made $500 more than the original offer, and yet you saved your mechanic $500. As for the $100 more you COULD have had? Think about that the next time your mechanic does something for you for free. A mechanic that likes you is VERY handy.

This is the second vehicle I've wrecked through them, and any work I can't do myself (i.e. the really expensive stuff) they get it.

My daughter totaled a car one December. I took the insurance payoff and bought another one. The next summer, I got an irate call from a woman who wanted the code (anti theft thing) for the radio and what did I do with the CD changer? Turns out someone had bought the hulk, repaired the front end and resold it. I'm sure they made a profit on the deal or they wouldn't have bothered.

I siced her on the original dealer (I was the 2nd owner) for the code and I have no idea what happened to the CD changer.

One thing I did do was make sure the title reflected that the truck had been in an accident. I like and trust my mechanic, but I cover my ass every chance I get.

If for no other reason than you don't know everyone in the chain, and even though you trust the person dealing directly with you, the person "behind" them may not be as trustworthy.
