a $700 dress...normally i dont spend more that $50 on clothes and i hate shopping but i think i may be severely in lust with her...she was soooooo pretty...but she was sooo expensive,....i am torn

Any dress that costs that much is bound to have a less expensive "clone"... or take the picture to a seamstress, and have one made just for you :)

By the way, expensive dresses don't last longer than cheap dresses -- they generally last only a few wearings because of the finicky fabrics and the harsh dry cleaning chemicals = it doesn't look good for long.

Edited to ad -- I've made the mistake of "investment" buying myself but the truth is, no, you won't wear it forever, not if you want to look reasonably sane and up-to-date you won't. But I wish someone had told me what I'm telling you. I still feel stupid about purchases made 25 years ago. :-(

I used to splurge all the time, but have grown pickier, and more practical. I'll spend money on good purses, sometimes on good shoes though I tend to thrash shoes terribly (I had dreams for weeks about a $450 pair of Versace sandals, but I didn't buy them). Depends on if you can afford it, and if it's a good investment.

If it's a "quality" designer, then it often won't ever lose it's value, you know? An heirloom piece to pass along to loved ones who happen to be the same size as you...

Do you live in NYC? Go to some of the vintage stores in Manhattan for fun / different stuff. A lot of the super rich wankers in NYC will buy an amazing dress and wear it once and turn it over to the vintage store, or they'll just buy like rabid sheep and then turn things never worn even once over to vintage, where it'll be probably 1/4 of the price, and if you can get a Chloe or Gucci or anything for a quarter of retail, it's a good investment.

Also, check out bluefly.com , they have a really pretty easily searchable site, lots of good stuff, sometimes terrific dresses, all for at least 25% off, sometimes up to 80% off.
