So, what's your first supper of 2011 gonna be?
‎10 minutes till suppertime here-
I poached some haddock over a layer of baby lima beans
with garlic, coriander and some chicken stock,
and covered the entire thing
with a layer of sliced bell pepper.

My kitchen smells SOOOO good right now!

1. I'll eat after I've made more biscotti
:D

I dumped all the remaining zests (orange, lemon and lime) together with some flaked and shredded coconut and sliced almonds. Should be an interesting flavor.

While the first batch is baking, I'll have a bag of of the "Tasty Bite - Madras Lentils" my mother gave me for Christmas :9

Sure, I could cook something, but I'm baking and that's enough effort for the evening :P

We would either quickly become best friends, or immediatly
fight to the death.

Personally, I'm hoping for the whole 'becoming best friends' option.

3. mmmm haddock
Wish we could get fresh haddock out west.

We're having spice-rubbed oven baked country ribs, twice baked potatoes, broccoli salad, and whole wheat banana bread.

On the back of the stove is the turkey carcass simmering in a big pot to make soup for tomorrow. It smells of sage and onion and holiday memories.

I'll be baking up some more Christmas cookies tomorrow to send off with the college freshman. Go Ducks!

Blessings on us all, today and this year.

The fruitcake is delicious. I bought *gasp* a Trappist Abbey Monastery Fruitcake. 13.50 for a 1 lb piece. Expensive but very tasty. I was actually surprised at how small a 1 lb cake is, it's so dense.

Anyway, onward and upward.

37. Because I'm a man who takes IMPORTANT things very seriously, that's why.
Russet? What breed, what variety of RUSSET?
Idaho russet? Those heart-shaped russets that grow on the mildly rippling hills southwest of Novosibirsk? The "russet" they plant among the withering grapevines
late in the season among the chalky hillsides of the French Riviera?

I love mashed potatos, and I make the BEST mashed potatos ever,
and that doesn't happen accidentally- it happens because
i pay VERY close attention to EVERY detail in the process.

I pay very close attention to EVERY detail in every process EVER.

24. I've done that myself a time or two- it's a good way to make tasty food FAST.
Those "El Monterrey" frozen burritos are cheap as dirt,
and I like to throw a 'family pack' of them into the oven
covered with some of my homemade sauce and a layer of bag cheese....

Most of my family knows NOTHING about good Mexican food.
The closest they've ever been to Mexican food is the TacoBell in Altoona PA.

So, I can throw that dish together in 10 minutes and they think
I'm some sort of Expert on exotic foreign cuisine.

51. lol - thank you! it was quite wonderful, and quite plain - just oysters and milk
and a bit of salt and pepper.

I usually prefer to sautee some minced shallots and garlic in butter, then cook the oysters in that before adding cream and even some paprika and other spices...

but this time, I went back to my childhood (except that I added salt, which I don't think my mom ever did) with just milk and oysters.

My ex-sweeties parents were from there & they had it shipped in

Since she kicked my ass to the curb and I limped all the way back here to PA,
I just can't get it anymore.

Here in PA, my Stepfather's family has been operating a butchery/meat market
for over 100 years, and they make some things that I just can't get anywhere else.
but they don't make a Bratwurst worth talking about.

47. Hopping John, Smoked Pork Chops, Spoonbread and Salad
Hopping John - blackeyed peas cooked for hours with ham hocks, onion, garlic, bell pepper, cumin, smoked paprika and red pepper flakes. Served over Basmati rice.

Smoked pork chops - smoked at the historic country store down the road from us from pigs they raise themselves. Pan seared - that is all these need to be fantastic.

Spoonbread made with stone ground cornmeal, sour cream, Silver Queen corn, and sharp cheddar cheese.

I forgot the hog jowls! I bought one hog jowl at the country store - first time I ever got one with teeth - one entire jaw side, smoked and incredibly good. I cut all the useable meat aff the bones, sliced the jowl portion (I should have cut the skin/rind part off) and baked until crisp. The big muscle that had no fat to it, I cut up and put in the freezer to season another dish.

The part of this traditional Southern New Years Day meal we left out was the greens. Neither hubby or I like greens very much and we got burned out on them last year when we were getting lots of them with our CSA share. So we just had a nice green salad instead.

75. Mine too Avalux! I made sauerkraut with fancy sausages
this year instead of pork roast or chops. It was delicious!

Now we will have good luck all year.

:hi:

52. I forgot to shop early yesterday so the stores were closed. I searched

for something from the freezer. I found scallops and shrimp. Great all I had to do was let them thaw. Once they started to thaw I saw on of the scallops was a funny red/brown color. So I threw them out. Next the shrimp looked odd. So I threw them out and emptied out my parents freezer (it was mostly fillled with leftovers so it was not a great financial loss). So what next? Beans. I opened a can of beans...or tried to. The can opener was stripped of its gear. Threw out the can opener. But I had punctured a hole it the top of the beans so I had to throw those out too. We had Chinese food.

67. What do you consider to be "fancy cheese"?
I myself like cheese a lot, but my preferences are rather ordinary.

My favorite cheese of all time is Cotswold, and that's so boring
that it's actually BRITISH.

71. I had lentil soup.
Lentils are supposed to be fortune luck in Italy. That, and it's nice and cheap to make, as well as being good for you. I splurged and added some kielbasa to it. This was the first time I pureed it (before adding the kielbasa). I liked it WAAAAAAY better that way. I added some spinach along with the sausage after I blended it.

73. I love lentils, but I have never prepared them well. I don't know why.
I have to enjoy them at restaurants; when I make them at home
it ALWAYS ends badly.
And I'm a very good cook- everyone says so.
I've cooked stuff I never HEARD of before, and people enjoyed it.

But lentils? They just seem to hate me for some reason.
Perhaps I offended the God of Lentils in a former life.
