Okay PC gurus....here's one....

I have a Sansa Fuze digital music player.

For some reason when I try to sync updated playlists, the playlist keeps adding duplicate songs to the player from my PC (using Windows Media Player).

I've downloaded a bunch of file duplicate finding programs, but with them, when I try to pull up the Sansa Fuze player drives, they will not show in the file duplicate programs.

The only areas that show up are those on the physical computer.

Any suggestions what is going on?

1. While I'm not sure what's going on, but in regards to the file dupe programs ...

They're probably not finding dupes because there aren't any. A playlist, like in iTunes, is only a link to the original file. That's how a track can reside in multiple playlists and deleting a track from a playlist does not delete the track itself.

2. My Sansa Fuze doesn't actually "sync" playlists

The update only copies new playlists and tracks, it doesn't remove tracks.

If I copy a new playlist that has the same name as the old one, it will replace the playlist and copy any songs that weren't already on the device. It doesn't remove tracks, even if they are no longer on a playlist they stay on the device until they are manually deleted.

That doesn't explain duplicates. Have you checked media player to make sure it isn't seeing multiple versions of the same track? My music folder is setup to be shared and sometimes Media Player will see c:\music\artist\album\song123.mp3 and \\homepc\music\artist\album\song123.mp3 as two different tracks when they are the same.

As for the duplicate finding software, it my not be set to, or capable of, checking removable drives.

3. Here's what is really weird....

The playlist on the Sansa Fuze disappeared somehow, but the songs remained, so when I re-synced the playlist, instead of showing the songs all ready existed on the device, it added only certain songs from certain albums (for example, songs from Time-Life's Sound of the Seventies cds and songs from a handful of greatest hits cds).

Eventually, I had to go back in to WMP and delete the duplicates from the Sansa Fuze (it may also be that this is only happening on the 16 gig MicroSD card inserted into the slot).

4. MicroSD card adds another twist.

When I delete a playlist it gives me the option of deleting just the list or also the songs on the list. If I delete the songs with the list it will remove all of them, even if they are part of an album or another playlist.

I have Media Player set to update and re-arrange files and folders with new info from the internet. The song I sync today sometimes gets renamed and re-synced the next time.

I haven't used the MicroSD slot (yet) so I don't know what that would do.

I'm happy with the Fuze overall but the sync process with media player could use some work. From time to time I just clear everything off of the Fuze and start with a blank slate. That's the only way I've found to clean up the stuff the sync process leaves behind.
