I realize that for some men a cruel twist of life will render them partially bald. To me, I have never really felt that a bald man was somehow less of a man or even unattractive. But the combover is just hideous and fyi - you aren't fooling anyone by doing it.

Embrace your genetic heritage and shave that combover off and embrace the baldness!!!

1. I am unashamedly bald, and I could never figure it out, either.
It wasn't a "cruel twist of fate", as far as I'm concerned. It was just hair-loss.

2. For some they treat it as a 'cruel twist of fate' for me it's just life
I think when I was younger I had issues with dating a bald man but as you get older you realize you were pretty darn stupid when you were younger.

But I would not date a guy with a combover unless he'd get rid of it.

3. Baldness was never an issue with me when I was dating. I agree about comb-overs.
They really look ridiculous.

4. I have a receding hair line
And you're right about comb overs. I have accepted this as my "fate" in older age. Things could be worse.

Perhaps if people who are have receding hair lines or bald weren't laughed at or made fun of in the popular media, then maybe we wouldn't have this problem. Some folks still think it's funny when a man starts to lose his hair.

5. very valid point
although I would never made fun of someone who was bald.

Just those who were bald who thought they could hide it.

6. While I agree that really bad comb-overs are silly
I can forgive the ones that are less contrived. They probably just mean that the man kept combing his hair the way he always did, not realizing that he was getting so bald.

7. Sorry, your opinion doesn't matter to me.
I began to lose my hair when I was 20. I kept combing my hair the same way for a while, then lowered the part and combed over for years. I still comb over somewhat, but have raised the part several times.

The slight combover I have now fools me into thinking I have more hair than I really do. I don't think it fools anybody else. My wife loves me the way I am. My friends and relatives like me the way I am. They all realize I'm not trying to fool them, but just make myself feel better.

Since they're all fine with it and I don't even know you, you can shove your opinion.

22. Botox, if done right, isn't as bad as a combover
Yeah, if you shove the whole swollen can into someone's forehead it's gonna be obvious, but a little is fine.

As for "cake makeup"...do they even make that anymore?

If that's true it means his hair for the past decade or so has been "real".

Also, I really could've done without that lower picture, even if it's obviously shopped.

28. I can't really compare makeup to a comb-over but botox I can
Because just like a combover you can see just how bad it is. Nicole Kidman's face just looks wretched with all the botox she's done and I use to think she was beautiful. But what's really sad is kids like Lindsay Lohan thinking they need botox. Just Lindsay is only twenty something. If she wasn't partying too hard and smoking way too much she probably wouldn't need that stuff. Smoking will age you especially if you are a heavy smoker.

11. A true story
In the mid to late 90's, I was working in Worcester MA, doing Y2K stuff. My "right hand man" in the office was this girl Charlotte, one night we were working late and she said to me "I need to tell you something personal" I told her she could tell me anything, she had my complete trust. She said "The girls in the office laugh at you for trying to hide your bald spot... you should not comb your hair over it"

I was shocked... I had no idea I even had a bald spot. I had combed my hair straight back since I was a little kid and had simply not even tried to look at the top of my head... ever. I had no idea I was doing a comb-over. We laughed like hell and the next day I got my hair cut short and have kept it that way :D

14. they're not middle aged, they're OLD
my friend is on the bandwagon now of trying to pretend that 70 year olds with no hair or blue hair are "young," not even middle-aged, he used the word "young!"

sorry, those blue haired women you know are not middle-aged, they're over 70...but if they can fool even one person into believing they're middle-aged i guess you have your answer as to why they do it

27. Ponytails actually make you look balder
Because of the weight of the hair, it'll pull it down more and give more emphasis to the bald spot.

29. I think what happens to men as we get older is...
The hair from the tops of our heads starts growing in our ears and our eyebrows also grow longer instead.

Ever see someone who doesn't trim their ear hair and/or eyebrows and lets it go for a long time? :puke:

37. I resemble that remark!
Have kept my ponytail despite increasing baldness not out of vanity (I tell myself), nor do I think it hides my baldness at all. I've just had long hair since I was 15, and the washing/combing seems easier than the frequent clipping that the logical alternative (buzz cut) requires.

I am beginning to think it's past time to cut it all off, but when I mentioned doing just that as a New Year's eve activity, my girlfriend looked sad. So I've decided to keep my halo of long hair a little longer...

Maybe for the Spring Equinox? Buzzzzzzz

32. Barbers often assume you want it that way
My SO always has to tell barbers "Cut the top short - no combover!" because otherwise, they leave the top long. A lot of guys must want it that way.

SO actually looks LESS bald when his hair is short than when it's longer.

Hillary Clinton said "Full disclosure is the best way to go."

Guys, don't worry when your hairline makes the military move of "advancing to the rear".

The ladies (at least this one) thinks it's fine.

:loveya:

DH was watching the Beatles Anthology tonight. They were at a party in 1964 and I said "Isn't that George Martin?" and he said yes. I said, "George Martin used to be young and handsome; now he's old and handsome."

So I assured DH that "old and handsome" was cool. Told him that, for example, George Clooney's dad, Nick, is old and handsome.
