Ski Dubai

Along with renting ski equipment they also include jackets and other cold weather gear since most folks in Dubai do not own heavy coats.

1. An episode during one of the recent Amazing Race seasons
was filmed there. It was wild. And I think Anthony Bourdain may have gone to Ski Dubai in one of his tv episodes as well. What a waste of water and energy. One of the lawyers in my department is based in Dubai and when she was back for our departmental retreat several people asked her about this place. She hemmed and hawed, but finally admitted that she took her kids there for ski lessons so that they knew the basics when the family got together in Switzerland (she is a Swiss national of Iranian descent).

4. I thought Iran had mountains where you can ski
I would like to think that water gets recycled at Ski Dubai

5. Iran does have mountains and I believe a small but active
ski industry. But Maryam doesn't go there anymore. While she is Swiss, she is married to an American and her kids are American citizens. Her whole family pretty much migrated to Switzerland years ago. I believe you are correct and that the water at Ski Dubai is recycled.

3. I think dubai is one of the 'atlas shrugged' islands.
Might also be New Zealand, but that is just a guess.

6. Took my daughters to play in the snow and ice there on day when it was 50+Centigrade outside.
Literally went from -2C to 55C in the space of a few min. MY lungs physically ached from that.

FYI all the melt-water goes into the landscaping. Most of our water here already comes from de-salinization, most of which is the efficient type that is coupled with power plants... so not as big a waste as you might imagine.

But yes, surreal!

7. That's right - you live over there
I think it's a bizarre concept but why not have an indoor ski park? I mean children who live there have no idea just how much fun it is to play in the snow. I don't know if I would visit there if I was travelling to Dubai; I mean I live near plenty of decent places for skiing and I get enough snow. But if I lived there I would make it a point to take my kids or my nieces/nephews there once or twice a year just for the fun. And it's nice that coats are a part of the entry price.
