We had a baby last night!

Big healthy baby boy, about 140 pounds:



Quarter horse, probably will be a dun.

I am so amazed that they stand immediately after they are born, rather brilliant of them!

3. He is very vigorous - but being very cooperative

We've handled him all over in an effort to "imprint" him. This is the mama's first foal and she is doing great - protective, but not overly so and allowing us to mess with the colt.

I'll have more pictures later I hope - it was 29 F and I had been at the barn at 3:30 AM looking for this arrival. Of course Mom waited until we had all gone to bed to have the colt. She didn't look interested in having him when I checked, but by the time we were at the barn at 7 AM, there he was, standing, nursing and dry.

He's already tested catering and trotting and done quite nicely at both.

16. The biggest problem for them is figuring out how to fold their legs up so they can lie down!

They'll kind of get halfway and then topple over - it's so cute.

30. His father is really tall while Mama is about average height

Mama is about 14:3 hands; Dad is about 16 hands or better. I think the kid will be closer to Dad's height when he is grown. The kid is doing his best to grow fast, too. He wants more milk than Mama can make. We're going to have to set up his own place to eat really soon!

For those who don't know - A hand = 4 inches. 14 hands is 56 inches. 14:3 is 14 hands and 3 inches or 59 inches tall at the withers or top of the shoulders. A 15 hands is a pretty common height. 16 hands is pretty tall for the average riding horse, especially for a Quarter Horse, which is the breed my horses are.

I've noticed their eyes. Do horses have reflective cells behind their retinas like cats do?

It was early and very cloudy when I took those photos, so there was more reflection than normal.
