Bad day, went on a call for a traffic fatality. Turns out I knew the guy.

His parents were friends with mine. We use to go over to play on the weekends. I remember when they brought him home from the hospital after being born. Haven't seen them in 20 years since they moved away.
It was a sad lonely way to go. Police Academy doesn't really prep you for shit like this.

10. ya, I spoke to Dad's g/f |
|
I was handling traffic and keeping an eye on the "hit" car, I couldn't get away to speak with the dad who was on the other side of the scene. I did manage to speak with Dad's girlfriend who was on my side. His parent split sometime back. I'll go to the funeral and properly pay my respects.

4. Does your department have some sort of counselor that you can talk with? |
|
. . . This is pretty much the same thing that kept me from pursuing a career as a paramedic once I got out of the Army (more along the lines of dealing with horribly injured babies and children). . . I can only imagine how personally traumatic that must have been for you. . . If it's available -- take advantage of some counseling. You may not even realize it, but it might do you a LOT of good to speak with a professional on a confidential basis about how this is affecting you. . . .

11. They do offer counseling thankfully |
|
Thanks for the advice. The children thing is the worst. First suicide I had was a High School student. It's hard to see such young lives ended so harshly. I love the EMTs they are some of the greatest...

5. What a tough thing. I've known EMTs who were put in similar |

positions with friends and family. :(

I don't think anything could prep you for something like this. I agree with MFM, counseling may help you, even if you don't think so now.
Condolences to all.
