My wife fell in our kitchen a week ago Friday. She had her knee operated on last Friday. We got her home last evening, and we are making her as comfy as possible. We peeled back her wrapping for a look-see. Mini-Alley who loves the special effects of CSI, Closer, and other death and dismemberment shows RAN out of the room..

4. If you had an explanation thread, I missed it.

I'm guessing something in her knee completely gave out, thus the fall and the operation.

And I didn't think staples were still used to stitch wounds together. I had them, um, 33 years ago when I had a ruptured appendix. I would have thought that kind of stitching would have been improved beyond staples by now...

Oh, and it hurt like hell to have the staples removed back then. Hopefully, as commented on below, it won't be so bad for Ally :)

5. I believe it was an assassination attempt by one of the kitties..

When ever Alley walks by the kitchen the kitties either weave through her legs or throw themselves in front of her path looking for a scratching or a meal.. Alley says she didn't know what happened, she just suddenly found herself on her butt right next to the kitty dishes. It is my belief that she is protecting someone..

So far both kitties have been extensively waterboarded, but neither have confessed.

I just thought there might have been more information now that we know knee surgery was necessary. Maybe denbot's waterboarding the wrong suspect

8. The ortho surgeon really did not spend much time with us.

We lucked out even though this guy probably did not say more then a dozen words during the initial examination, about all that came out of his mouth was he'll have to operate. Alley did not even know she was going to have another plate installed until she was being prepped for surgery, to which her Doctor showed up 1 1/2 hours late. We asked him why her leg broke in such a simple fall and all he said was during her fall she transfer her weight at an angle Alley's knee was not designed for.

I've seen more human interaction during drive-by shootings. Don't get me wrong, he wasn't rude or arrogant. He just blew through the examination, and for the surgery there were no apologies for being late, just a let's go, and off they went.

Normally I would have let someone have a piece of my mind, but I figured that it would be best not to piss-off someone who would be holding a knife on my sweety-pie in a few minutes.

The staff at the ortho group kept saying he was the best, and just about every person at the hospital mentioned that this doctor was the one they would want operating on them.

We took the unsolicited praise with a grain of salt. Saturday morning I was able to sneak in a surf session with my buddy who works at Cedars Sinai. I mentioned how everyone praises Alley's Doctor, and my buddy asked me "if he's so good why is he working out of Torrance Memorial Hospital?". Personally I am just grateful we have insurance, and are covered.

From day one Alley has be responded really well to physical therapy, and is progressing at a rate that is surprising the both of us.
Her range of motion, and ability to progress with what seem to be a minimun level of pain bodes very well for a full and rapid recovery. Today Alison looked up Doctor Zinar.

I now don't give a shit that Doctor Zinar is not a chatty touchie feelie kind of guy. Doctor Zinar is the real deal and we are very lucky he was in the rotation the day Alley's HMO sent her to the Ortho Group.

I hope Ally heals quickly. My cat likes to do the same thing, no matter where I'm going. I either stop, "tell" him to get out of the way, or take small steps. Sometimes, nothing works and you just have to wait until they lose interest ;)

16. Yeah... I had my appendix out in the early 60's

The staples hurt like an sob to come out. Flash forward to 2009 I had abdominal surgery with a lot of staples. I was in terror of those coming out. It didn't hurt a bit. Big advances have been made.

It's still metal going through live skin. Unless there's a topical anesthetic they dab on before pulling them out...

Funny how sometimes the medicos with the worst bedside manner are the best surgeons.

He was probably late because it took longer to fix the last patient than he thought. I'm sure you agree that doing it right is better than doing it quickly.

That's a pretty ugly wound, but it will be gone soon enough.
