Oscar nominations 2011: 'King's Speech' leads with 12 nominations; 'True Grit' nets 10

The Academy Award nominations, announced this morning in Los Angeles, mostly stuck to the script that Oscar-season observers expected.

"The King's Speech" led the field with 12 nominations, including nods for best picture and director, while "True Grit" galloped close behind with a healthy 10 nominations. "The Social Network" also landed its expected best picture nomination, along with seven other nods.

Other entries in the best picture race include anticipated contenders "Black Swan," "The Fighter," "True Grit," "Inception," "The Kids Are All Right" and "Toy Story 3," the top-grossing film of 2010 and the third animated film in history to be recognized as a best picture hopeful. The trapped-hiker drama "127 Hours" and the Ozark-Mountain odyssey "Winter's Bone" rounded out the field.

The other high-profile categories also played out as previously forecast, with a few exceptions. Colin Firth earned his second consecutive best actor nomination for overcoming a stutter in "The King's Speech," while James Franco earned his first nomination for partially amputating a limb in "127 Hours."

Natalie Portman's "Black Swan" madness paid off, as she too earned a nod for playing a cuticle-ripping, feather-sprouting ballerina. All "The Fighter" front-runners - Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Melissa Leo - also earned props in their respective supporting categories, while Mark Wahlberg, who played the fighter of the film's title, was overlooked.

6. Wasn't A Great Year for Movies

None of these films will be remembered 5 years from now. I hold that the Oscars should do what the Hall of Fames do in sports. Wait a few years after the release of a film to judge what was the best film of that year.

2010 was the second consecutive year in a decade that I actually gave a rat's ass about going to see any films. But YMMV.

there were parts in the beginning where I was waiting for the Ken Burns' narrator to start up and take it fully into a Ken Burns Documentary. A beautiful film.

20. Not hardly. Bridges portrayal was flat. Wayne still owns it.

Although it would be funny if Bridges did win best actor for a movie that John Wayne won best actor for 42 years earlier.

10. disagree- several of these films were very good

The Kids are All Right was excellent, acting in Black Swan was great (plot rather trite, though). Loved the Kings Speech- Firth and Rush were very good. Haven't seen True Grit ( I remember seeing the original), but the Coens are usually very good. Winter's Bone and the Fighter got great reviews. (haven't seen em, subject matter of either not my thing)

Thought it was OK. Good acting by Lawrence and Hawkes, who both got nods, but I thought the movie was slow and didn't have enough substance in it.
They spent the whole movie trying to find Lawrence's character's father. That was bascially the whole movie. Not much else happened.
I was expecting it to be a bit better.

19. the only problem with that is it could become like the NBA

Half the damn NBA teams get into the playoffs. You have to keep the nominations down somewhat. By expanding the actor/actress awards, you suddenly have to nominate 40 people. If there's a down year, you could have some sucky actors/actresses getting nominated.

The only way I could see them doing it successfully is if they have to pick from multiple genres, so you have to include comedies, animation, horror/sci-fi, indie, and foriegn films in your best picture, actor, actress, supporting actor and actress, and director awards.
