74. Hell, when it comes to Johnny Cash, you've got your options. "Delia's Gone" ...
easily the darkest murder ballad he ever did. The second and fourth verses are just downright disturbing.

Delia, oh, Delia Delia all my life
If I hadn't have shot poor Delia, I'd have had her for my wife
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

I went up to Memphis and I met Delia there
Found her in her parlor And I tied to her chair
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

She was low down and trifling and she was cold and mean
Kind of evil make me want to grab my sub machine
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

First time I shot her, I shot her in the side
Hard to watch her suffer but with the second shot she died
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

But jailer, oh, jailer Jailer, I can't sleep
'Cause all around my bedside I hear the patter of Delia's feet
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

So if you woman's devilish you can let her run
Or you can bring her down and do her like Delia got done
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

21. Desperado by Alice Cooper
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM2UXFe78sc

I'm a gambler and I'm a runner
but you knew that when you layed down
I'm a picture of ugly stories
I'm a killer and I'm a clown
Step into the street by sundown
step into your last goodbye
You're a target just by living
twenty dollars will make you die
I wear lace and I wear black leather
my hands are lightning upon my gun
My shots are clean and my my shots are final
my shots are deadly and when it's done
You're as stiff as my smoking barrel
you're as dead as a desert night
You're a notch and I'm a legend
you're at peace and I must hide
Tell me where the hell I'm going
let my bones fall in the dust
Can't you hear that ghost that's calling
as my colt begins to rust in the dust
I'm a killer I'm a clown
I'm a priest that's gone to town

57. Killer ...
What did I do to deserve such a fate?
I didn't really want to get involved in this thing
Someone handed me this gun and I
I gave it everything
Yeah, I gave it everything

I came into this life looked all around
I saw just what I liked and took what I found
Nothing came easy, nothing came free
Nothing came at all until they
Came after me

Yeah hey, yeah

What did I do to deserve such a fate?
I gave it everything
Now I need to escape
Someone near me calling my name
I gave it everything, I gave it everything

35. Lizzie Borden took an axe, and gave her mother 40 whacks

and when the job was neatly done, she gave her father 41.

Yesterday in old Fall River
Mr. Andrew Borden died
And he got his daughter, Lizzie
On a charge of homicide

Some folks say she didn't do it
And others say of course she did
But they all agree, Miss Lizzie B
Was a problem kinda kid

'Cause you can't chop your
Papa up in Massachusetts
Not even if it's planned
As a surprise (a surprise)
No, you can't chop your
Papa up in Massachusetts
You know how neighbors love to criticize

Well, she got him on the sofa
Where he'd gone to take a snooze
And I hope he went to Heaven
'Cause he wasn't wearing shoes

Lizzie kinda rearranged him
With a hatchet so they say
Then she got her mother
In that same old fashioned way

But you can't chop your
Mama up in Massachusettes
Not even if you're tired of
Her cuisine (her cuisine)
No can't chop your mama up in Massachusetts
You know it's almost sure to cause a scene

Well, they really kept her
Hopping on that busy afternoon
With both down and upstairs chopping
While she hummed a ragtime tune

They really made her hustle
And when all was said and done
She'd removed her mother's bustle
When she wasn't wearing one

Now can't chop your
Mama up in Massachusetts
And then blame all the damage
On the mice (on the mice)
No, you can't chop your
Mama up in Massachasetts
That sort of thing just isn't very nice

Now it wasn't done for pleasure
And it wasn't done for spite
And it wasn't done because
The lady wasn't very bright

She'd always done the slightest thing
That mom and papa bid
They said, Lizzie, cut it out
So that's exactly what she did

But you can't chop your
Papa up in Massachusetts
And then get dressed
And go out for a walk
No, you can't chop your
Papa up in Massachusetts
Massachusetts is a far cry
From New York

You can't chop your
Papa up in Massachusetts
Shut the door and lock and latch it
Here comes Lizzie with a brand new hatchet

You can't chop your
Papa up in Massachusetts
Such a snob I've heard it said
She met her pa and cut him dead

You can't chop your
Papa up in Massachusetts
Jump like a fish
Jump like a porpoise
All join hands and habeas corpus

You can't chop your
Papa up in Massachausetts
Massachusetts is a far cry
From New York

39. Miss Otis Regrets, Cole Porter, 1934.
Sung by Ethel Waters
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP2UypjZbMo

...
And from under a velvet gown,
She drew a gun and shot her lover down, Madam
Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today

When the mob came and got her and dragged her from the jail, Madam,
They strung her from the old willow cross the way
And the moment before she died,
She lifted up her lovely head and cried, Madam
Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today.

60. Elvis' C's "Alison" is also a song about killing (an ex because she's with someone else)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYDGFZ5e6HA

Oh it's so funny to be seeing you after so long, girl.
And with the way you look I understand
that you were not impressed.
But I heard you let that little friend of mine
take off your party dress.
I'm not going to get too sentimental
like those other sticky valentines,
'cause I don't know if you've been loving some body.
I only know it isn't mine.
Alison, I know this world is killing you.
Oh, Alison, my aim is true.

Well I see you've got a husband now.
Did he leave your pretty fingers lying
in the wedding cake?
You used to hold him right in your hand.
I'll bet he took all he could take.
Sometimes I wish that I could stop you from talking
when I hear the silly things that you say.
I think somebody better put out the big light,
cause I can't stand to see you this way.

Alison, I know this world is killing you.
Oh, Alison, my aim is true.
My aim is true.

65. The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll - Bob
Hey,
He has a few, some more direct than others.

William Zanzinger killed poor Hattie Carroll
With a cane that he twirled around his diamond ring finger
At a Baltimore hotel society gath’rin’
And the cops were called in and his weapon took from him
As they rode him in custody down to the station
And booked William Zanzinger for first-degree murder
But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears
Take the rag away from your face
Now ain’t the time for your tears

- Bob Dylan

The time for the tears in the song after the sentencing.

Peace

80. "Ballad of Hollis Brown" is a good Bob option too.
Pretty dark tune about a guy that kills his whole family and then himself. "Hurricane" is another good bet.

Canadian psychedelic obscurity I heard for the first time a few years ago. It's about a skilled taxidermist who, apparently, kills and stuffs other kinds of animals beyond deer and bears...

75. There's a million of'em. Murder's a very common song theme. I thought of Neil Young...
"Down by the River"

Be on my side,
I'll be on your side,
baby
There is no reason
for you to hide
It's so hard for me
staying here all alone
When you could be
taking me for a ride.

Yeah, she could drag me
over the rainbow,
send me away
Down by the river
I shot my baby
Down by the river,
Dead, oh, shot her dead.

You take my hand,
I'll take your hand
Together we may get away
This much madness
is too much sorrow
It's impossible
to make it today.

Yeah, she could drag me
over the rainbow,
send me away
Down by the river
I shot my baby
Down by the river,
Dead, oh, shot her dead.

Be on my side,
I'll be on your side,
baby
There is no reason
for you to hide
It's so hard for me
staying here all alone
When you could be
taking me for a ride.

Yeah, she could drag me
over the rainbow,
send me away
Down by the river
I shot my baby
Down by the river,
Dead, oh, shot her dead.

76. Also, one of the most twisted songs I've ever heard, "Country Death Song" by the Violent Femmes.
The sound of a gun cocking right after the line "count to seven" is soooo creepy.

I had me a wife, I had me some daughters.
I tried so hard, I never knew still waters.
Nothing to eat and nothing to drink.
Nothing for a man to do but sit around and think.
Nothing for a man to do but sit around and think.

Well, I'm a thinkin' and thinkin', 'til there's nothin' I ain't thunk.
Breathing in the stink, 'til finally I stunk.
It at that time, I swear I lost my mind.
I started making plans to kill my own kind.
I started making plans to kill my own kind.

Come little daughter," I said to the youngest one,
Put your coat on, we'll have some fun.
Go out to mountains, the one to explore.
Her face then lit up, I standing by the door.
Her face then lit up, I standing by the door.

Come little daughter, I will carry the lanterns.
Go out tonight, we'll go to the caverns.
Go out tonight, we'll go to the caves.
Kiss your mother goodnight and remember that God saves.
Kiss your mother goodnight and remember that God saves.

A led her to a hole, a deep black well.
I said "make a wish, make sure and not tell and
close you're eyes dear, and count to seven.
You know your papa loves you, good children go to heaven.
You know your papa loves you, good children go to heaven.

I gave her a push, I gave her a shove.
I pushed with all my might, I pushed with all my love.
I threw my child into a bottomless pit.
She screaming as she fell, but I never heard her hit.
She screaming as she fell, but I never heard her hit.

Gather round boys to this tale that I tell.
You wanna know how to take a short trip to hell?
It's guaranteed to get your own place in hell.
Just take your lovely daughter and push her in the well.
Take your lovely daughter and throw her in the well.

Don't speak to me of lovers, with a broken heart.
You wanna know what really tear you apart?
I'm going out to the barn, with a never stoppin' pain!
I'm going out to the barn, to hang myself in shame.

82. The Knoxville Girl
The Knoxville Girl

The Knoxville Girl

I met a little girl in Knoxville
A town we all know well
And every Sunday evening
Out in her home I'd dwell
We went to take an evening walk
About a mile from town
I picked a stick up off the ground
And knocked that fair girl down;

She fell down on her bended knees
For mercy she did cry
Oh, Willie dear, don't kill me here
I'm unprepared to die
She never spoke another word
I only beat her more
Until the ground around me
Within her blood did flow.

I took her by her golden curls
And I drug her 'round and 'round
Throwing her into the river
That flows through Knoxville town
Go down, go down, you Knoxville girl
With the dark and roving eyes
Go down, go down, you Knoxville girl
You can never be my bride.

I started back to Knoxville
Got there about midnight
My mother she was worried
And woke up in a fright
Saying, ""Dear son, what have you done
To bloody your clothes so?""
I told my anxious mother
I was bleeding at my nose.

I called for me a candle
To light myself to bed
I called for me a handkerchief
To bind my aching head
Rolled and tumbled the whole night through
As troubles was for me
Like flames of hell around my bed
And in my eyes could see.

They carried me down to Knoxville
And put me in a cell
My friends all tried to get me out
But none could go my bail
I'm here to waste my life away
Down in this dirty old jail
Because I murdered that Knoxville girl
The girl I loved so well.
