Cover songs that should NEVER be made
Inspired by the trauma from this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x9679785
which made me think of Celine Dion's gawdawful cover of AC/DC (You shook me all night long) I realized some singers should just NEVER attempt some songs.
For instance, my favorite, Geddy Lee of Rush should never attempt either Frank Sinatra's My Way or anything by the Beastie Boys. (:hi: Flvegan)
What are some other nearly too horrific to contemplate covers?

7. Cracked.com has a 20 entry article on the subject of already made worst cover songs
Edited on Tue May-03-11 10:51 AM by Zephie

Truly terrifying. Except for the Counting Crows cover of Big Yellow Taxi. I enjoyed that one and disagree vehemently with that entry.

Interestingly I was originally going to say any cover of Pink Floyd should be prohibited but apparently Korn already did it, so I have to go cry now.

25. He shouldn't cover anything except Sabbath songs.
That "covers" CD he issued sucked hind TEAT. "Mississippi Queen?" There have got to be 1000 bar bands across America with a better version of that than "The Ozzman."

I view this little piece of industrial waste in the same way that I view Bob Dylan's "Self Portrait"...dreck from Zeus.

By the way, I love how you said "Geddy Lee of Rush." Like we needed that extra bit of ID. Everybody who is anybody knows who Geddy is. You don't even need to put the last name on it. Just Geddy.

That is all.

For now.

24. Forgetting that it was karaoke night at my neighborhood bar many years ago...
.
.
.
...I dropped in for a few.
.
.
.
There was a limo out front and inside were 3 entry-level Japanese execs out for a night
on the town with their 3 entry-level exec American hosts.
.
They had requested a night of karaoke.
.
.
.
I was going to gulp my beer and fucking FLEE -- when one young Japanese man got up and
did the most HORRENDOUS and energetic version of "Born to be Wild" that you can imagine.
.
He was incredibly off-key, off-beat, off-everything but he was also just plain INCREDIBLE.
.
.
I would've paid a cover charge to see him -- and become a regular if he had been a local.
.
.
.
The crowd went NUTS for him -- standing O's -- both laugh-crying amusement and, I think,
a realization that they might not see THAT much "I don't give one flying fuck" attitude again
in their entire lives.
.
.
.

I'm not even going to post a link for that one...it's well know and well despised on DU, and anyone who thinks he might have actually pulled off a classic can go over to YouTube and judge for themselves.

28. But sometimes you hear a cover that shouldn't be done and you think WOW, glad they did
Case in point - when Sid Vicious did a remake of Frank Sinatra's "My Way" - what a classic!

29. In my life, I've only had that reaction TWICE
Dwight Yoakum's Crazy Little Thing Called Love (remake of Queen)
and Johnny Cash's "Hurt" a remake of Nine Inch Nails.
I pretty much despise covers in general. They seem to be ego driven indulgences.

30. There are some very good covers out there that have exceeded the originals
Edited on Tue May-03-11 02:54 PM by LynneSin
I am a massive fan of the band Queen and yet I think Nine Inch Nails did a way better job with "Get Down Make Love". I also love White Zombie's version of KC & the Sunshine Band's "Get Down Make Love". Another great remake, and it I would never though ANYONE could improve upon this but it's Velvet Revolver's version of ELO's "Can't Get it Out of My Head" (which is one of my favorite ELO songs!)

I think when it comes to remakes, unless you can make it a much better or unique version of the original then it's just lameass copycatting.
