Care to interpret a dream?
I was at someone's house, visiting friends. The light in the house was nice, a kind of soft yellow, like when the sun is going down but isn't close to the horizon yet. And there was a little dust floating around in the light. The house wasn't perfect; it looked lived-in, which was also nice. Outside the house was reminiscent of outside my Grandma's old house in Paramount, CA, but not really. The door to the kitchen -- the house's main entrance -- was loose, and had only a flimsy lock in the doorknob.

In a big event room (like at a church) inside the house were relatives of my friends, who were also somehow my relatives but not really. They were older folks. I was in the kitchen. An old friend from a chorus I used to sing with came in, and brought donuts. Suddenly the kitchen was packed with donuts and pies. I couldn't decide what to eat first. A lovely peach pie was calling to me, but so were the chocolate cake donuts, and a bear claw, and a cream-filled donut (which I don't like).

Then my sisters were there. They arrived in my old Starlet, and the hatch was packed with donuts and pies. My eldest sister kept picking up different donuts, saying "eat this one first, it's your favorite."

Then we -- my sisters and I -- were at the beach. White sand and clear, blue-green water. Then some of the relatives were there, and I urged everyone to go into the water because I knew from experience that it was absolutely wonderful. But something kept me from going into the water. Then I was in the house asking people if they were going to go to the beach, and no one was, and I was shocked that no one wanted to go to the beach.

What the . . . Any ideas?

1. Hmm... My guess
It seems like you view your friends and family as loving and doting (cakes/pies/etc), but perhaps holding you back from something you want to do or achieve (the disinterest in the beach, the inability to get into the water). I take the loose doorknob/lock to mean that perhaps you let people in easily, and feel no need to try to exclude people from your life as the kitchen is viewed as the heart of the home in many cultures.

Hope this helps!

and your personal situation, I would hazard that you have some decisions to make, among some mostly desirable choices (delicious pies, doughnuts and cakes) but something is holding you back -- this happens twice, when you can't choose between the desserts and can't get yourself to go in the water, even though you know it is pleasurable. Not sure of the significance of the friends and relatives? Hope that sheds a little light. This is a good book for interpreting your own dreams, Dreams Your Magic Mirror by Elsie Sechrist. It's old, but may have been reprinted, or you could easily find a used copy online. Sechrist, if I'm remembering correctly, knew Edgar Cayce, the famous healer, psychic, clairvoyent, etc., and uses his teachings in showing one how to interpret dreams. It's really an amazing book.

15. The reason I ask that.
Is I know that feeling of something trying to stop you from doing something.

It is a feeling of walking through dense air, or having to move some direction dragging a weight.

You have to power through it, although it can also get you to think again on some choice, and it is the opposite of doing everything by instinct, or coasting.

So when you mentioned 'something stopping you' I found that really interesting since I have powered through that feeling many times, when I thought something is a better decision.

So in that I am curious about that.

It is also one of the ways I think of the line in this song, "feels like I'm caring a heavy load".

Molly Hatchet: Flirtin With Disaster

And also in this song, "caring the load." Although that can have many meanings.

19. is what you're saying kinda like making you do something that
you're apprehensive about or even afraid of? Because I preach to my niece and nephew, who are 23 and 20 respectively and have an extremely hard time looking for work. I tell them just do it. Jump in with both feet. Take your apprehension with you; it's not going anywhere. It's like swimming. You know the water is cold but you really want to swim. Best thing to do is jump right in.

Heh - there's more water. Hmm.

So is what you're saying kinda like that? Am I misunderstanding?

18. I see that there's no difference.
THey're just two different ideas of the same concept: people holding back. I held back from going into the water. They held back from going to the beach in the first place.

6. I believe dreams about food usually have to do with emotional support--or the lack thereof.

I've dreamed before about going to a cafeteria, and there was very little food left.

However, in this case, there was an abundance of food, so sound like you perceive your friends and family as being emotionally supportive.

Now to the beach part--

"But something kept me from going into the water. " Sounds like fear/apprehension about something.

7. Sounds like a dream about death to me.
If we are honest with ourselves, we all fear it. What happens when we die? Who can be sure?

But we do know what happens here on Earth. Friends and family come to wish us farewell. They either come to a family home, or to a church. Often they bring food.

Death is a natural part of existence, and not a horrible thing to be feared. But no one wants to go any quicker than they have to. Did you know that baptism - immersion in water - is Christian symbolism for death?

Then again, I could be over-thinking this whole thing:

8. Here's a start at a Freudian reading.
"Someone's house" represents sex. The "friends" represent sex. "Visiting" represents sex. So being "at someone's house, visiting friends" represents sex. The "light in the house" gave me more trouble, but after thinking about it some, I see that it represents sex, because the "light" represents sex and the "house" represents sex

I don't have time to go through the entire dream in detail right now, but it seems like there are a lot of references to sex in it

10. You feel lonely, like you don't have a lot of friends, right?
I mean, you have family -- at the very least, you're married -- but you wish you had a larger family and a big pool of acquaintances, instead of the few, close friends you have. You occasionally feel "cut off" or "isolated."

How'm I doin'?

20. I can't tell you that! What kind of magician would I be if I gave away my secrets?
Seriously, though, it was a bunch of stuff.

The first paragraph suggests someone with a family of his/her own, a lived-in house is indicative of a married life, as is the fact that the main door leading into the house leads into the kitchen, which is untrue 99 percent of the time in real life. A single person's dream house does not lead to the kitchen. It leads to a bedroom or a living room, maybe a hallway, possibly a garage if they're a car nut or hate their house or something. The flimsy lock suggests you're happy enough in that marriage -- if the door barred itself behind you when you entered, that'd be a different story.

The second paragraph is the telling one, as far as a feeling of loneliness -- all of your friends' relatives suddenly become your relatives, which suggests a need to have more relatives or friends than you already have. The relatives almost seem to morph into the pies. (You go from relatives to pies in an instant), so when your sisters are telling you to try this one or that one, they're you, telling you that you'd like to meet more people.

The last graph is indicative of the feeling of isolation. Although you know something is good, when you suggest it to everyone else, they beg off. That says that you feel isolated from the rest of your community, however you may define community.

That, or you just really enjoy pies. Either way. :)

... and thirsty.

... all that food, and you couldn't eat it - all that good water, and you couldn't get in?

Did you wake up and have something to eat and drink?

I think that some of the interpretations you have received from others might just be spot on.

Dreams are really quite remarkable in that way - aren't they? Really. When you think about it? No filters. At all. No censors and just an incredible, creative way of relaying symbolic message(s)!

For me, what I usually try to remember is the overall "sense" of the dream. Overall. Is it anxiety? Is it questioning? Is it apprehension? Is it a sense of belonging? Is it that I am making a mistake in my life that I really don't want to admit to? Is it...(gulp)...FEAR?

Sometimes (most times) it is really a combination of ALL these things and our minds' way of trying to come to terms with it....and trying to give us a 'heads up' to it all. No more. No less.

No one can really know that any better than you - though having feedback can help tremendously towards those ends.

It is so good that you remember them so vividly! Though this probably goes without saying - might not be a bad idea to record them in a notebook close to your bed ASAP as you remember all the feelings and sensations that accompany them....then - in 'waking life' try to assimilate it all.

Though...it IS interesting that some dreams DO HAVE a universal, shall we say - appeal to them? Like I had one where I was loosing my teeth. Perhaps a fear of growing older? What is even more interesting is to find out that these sort of dreams (like this and others) are quite common...leaving one to believe in the universal truth on some level?

Tapping perhaps into some kind of 'collective unconscious" as per Jung and others.....

Kinda cool really, when you really stop to think about it! Timeless - like. No beginning, no middle, no end...just kind of tapping into that which just..........is....and always....will be!

I think Edgar Cayce kind of knew (and tapped into) this type of stuff......all along ~

Deep down....I mean....really, REALLY DEEP DOWN...we already HAVE the answers to our own questions....it's just a matter of finally accepting it. The courage to just finally 'peel back the layers"....you know what I mean?

Who was it that said..."What you resist will persist?" Yep-per. Feelings....no matter how darned hard we try to ignore them will ALWAYS and in ALL WAYS have a way of making themselves known.

Believe you me.....I have tried to escape those little rascals all my life....know what? They win.

sigh and shrug. They do. They do........indeed!

All the best to you for trying to sort this all out ~ ~ ~ ~ and believe me - you will. Shoot, you are halfway there...already! :-)
