I have a new lap top with Windows 7, it doesn't seem that much different from Vista.

1. You can replace it with Linux!

5. I have an HP mini that came INSTALLED with Linux. Great machine.

It is also entirely solid state - no physical hard drive. It stays up all the time unless the battery runs completely out, and that's rare since it has the double-cell pack and will stay up for over six hours on a full charge under heavy use. Sometimes I let it sit on a low battery for just a LITTLE bit too long and, well, it runs out. It only takes about ten seconds to boot.

3. If it's new, you might still be able to take it back and get a Mac!

4. Expect it to stay running.

I make a SHITLOAD of fun of M$ and Windows, but Win7 is actually a really stable operating system - best since 98SE. XP was close, but no cigar.

Vista is a piece of shit. (Disclaimer: I'm posting from a laptop that I bought right after Vista came out and that's what's on it AND I've got five other Vista laptops in the house)

The Win7 tower I've got is rock solid. Frankly I was shocked when it didn't freeze up after a few weeks. As for fun things to do with it - THAT hasn't really changed much from Vista. Play Mine Sweeper and Shanghai.

7. Well, I might have some suggestions - what's your experience level?

By that I mean, system administration, just "How the fuck do I find the calculator?", or something in between? I've got a bunch of books on the OS and might be able to point you toward one that would be appropriate. The demise of Borders and similar stores is not a good thing. You can't preview a book in a useful way online.

9. 7 looks pretty much like Vista, the difference is that Win 7 actually works.

I agree with the post upthread that Vista is a piece of sh*t. I would go further than that and say that of all the pieces of sh*t MS has foisted on us, Vista is the biggest, stinkiest piece of it.

With Win 7 they managed to fix most of the probs with Vista.

10. Not really fun but...

Hi,
I'm used to two monitors at work, but when I work at home only have one. One thing I like is you can take two windows, slide each one to each side of the screen and it splits them both evenly into two windows. Nice when going back and forth between two documents, or whatever you are working with. Of course it depends on how big your monitor is as to how big each window is. I am sure I am not utilizing some of the other helpful features. Just my two cents, have not noticed much, but I never had Vista, just went from XP to 7 because of all the horrid things I heard about Vista.

11. I'm low tech & underuse the machine's resources, but I've had these problems

with this laptop & 7:

A couple of months ago, there was a month or two of "restless cursor." I have no idea whether it was the IE or the 7. The cursor would skip around unpredictably, both in Live Mail and in DU typing. There are actually lots of blog Help threads somewhere in the MS website discussing this. The "solutions" ranged from, maybe you're resting the heels of your palms on the frame, putting pressure that sends commands, or sweaty paws that slide around sending commands.

Lately, couple of weeks, trouble with Copy/Paste, especially of URLs(?), the web address link that we need for O.P. I've tried both the Copy/Paste icons route and the Ctl+C/Ctl+V. Both ways work for text but SOMETIMES not for the web address box. Sometimes they work normally, and I have NO idea why.

All I use this machine for is DU, news items, a very few documents, and e-mail.


On Edit: Oh, another problem, YouTube vids stall all the time. But this might be because of DSL insufficient speed. I thought my frustration was over when I finally got off from dial-up.

12. Windows 7 is pretty much what Vista should have been, had they not

rushed it out the door. Windows 7 is the finished Vista product.

13. I've had my new lap top with Windows 7 for 3 weeks and IMO

it is the worst operating system I have ever used.
It crashes more often then Windows ME did
