Was out for a drive. Almost ran over a skunk. The little guy sprayed my car grill as I slammed on
the brakes. vent was on high at the time. Now the interior of the car smells like skunk. How long will it take to dissipate?

1. was it enough to make you gag or eyes water? or just kind of like good weed?
open the windows and let it air out as much as you can, if it wasn't to what I call the "oily" point it will go away before way too long. (and anybody that has much experience with skunk will know what I am talking about)

If you took a direct hit you might want to see about getting some good quality enzyme deodorant from a livestock or pet supply company and try running some into your vents

make sure you use stuff that has no stench of its own because there is NOTHING worse than perfume stench mixed with whatever stench you are trying to get rid of

used to be a product called odor-gone - it actually worked on direct hit skunk, don't know if it is still around

3. if you aren't going to any serious business meetings
run the fan while you are driving with the windows down so fresh air will pass through the vents too

sounds like you both pretty much missed each other LOL

6. "NOTHING worse than perfume stench mixed with whatever stench you are trying to get rid of..."
I used to work with a couple of people who fit that description.

8. Severe BO with an overlay of cologne or perfume
is as bad as skunk, at least up close.

4. Some them poor lil critters ain't so clear on the concept
Had a porky-pine threaten my car once. I kinda likes porky-pines so I waited at a respectful distance til porky got bored and wandered off. But I think porky's interpretation of the situation might coulda differed somewhat from mine

So you might try spraying the front of the car with a bleach solution, for example

5. enzymes
You should be able to get some at a local janitorial supply store. That's what carpet cleaners use on animal urine. If you put some in a spray bottle and use it on your car, that should help.

7. I drove around for a while with the vent on high and windows open. Smell is much less now.
Thanks for all the advice. Yes that animal enzyme stuff really works well on carpets.

10. Well I went out for dinner with my brother to celebrate our shared birthday and
on the way over he said "I should wash my hands because I just turned over the compost and I think I can still smell it". I said "could be me and a skunk you smell" LOL!

12. Oh, the smell of ethyl mercaptan! Reminds me of my youth,
Living in a small town, smelling it out in the country everytime we drove to a bigger town.

I would take the advice of ohnoyoudidnt. Janitorial supplies would probably work best.

But Elaine on Seinfeld required "saucing" with tomato sauce to get bad B.O. out of her hair! :-)
