1. Oh how I loved Burns and Allen.

Commercials were often part of the show in the '50s. So much so that some shows became essentially one long commercial.
So IIRC, back when the FCC had some spine they made a ruling that commercials had to be distinct from the show AND that the shows had to refrain from becoming just lengthy commercials.
I expect that to end. There seems to be a trend of inserting commercials into shows again. With 22 minutes an hour of commercials, there ain't much show left anyway.
