Boston.

THE original garage band.

Their first album was sublime.

The second one sucked.
And it went downhill from there.

1. For me, believe it or not...
.
.
.
... Led Zeppelin. Their first -- heavily blues-oriented, solid through-and-through... and amazing.
.
Their subsequent albums (for me) -- meh.
.
.
.

2. Not a band, but ... Terrence Trent D'Arby
I still like hearing his first album, the Hardline According to TTD. Where did he go?

Also, Tracy Chapman. Her debut was amazing, then Gimme One Reason, then...?

4. Guns & Roses
Sweet Child of Mine and Paradise City will always be favs of mine forever.

Still though. It's not a new thing. An emerging band has maybe ten years to compile that initial pre-fame album.

Then maybe a year to scramble together a second. And maybe a third two years after that.

It takes a solid talent to be able to pull that off.

Plus not having the stress of fame pull you apart.

5. Velvet Revolver...
...because really, what were they other than G'n'R with Scott Weiland out front instead of Axl?

There are songs on the first album that I still really enjoy, and I have "Sucker Train Blues" on a mix CD that I play often in the car when I need a real adrenaline rush.

Second album kinda sucked, Weiland imploded (again), end of story.

7. Velvet Revolver was my first thought as well.
By all rights should have been fucking awesome. Was pretty mediocre instead.

8. The Snoslins
A.K.A. The Nelsons. A little band from Lubbock, TX that won MTV's Basement Tapes contest in 1983. Sweet, funny guys.

The reason I refer to them as The Snoslins is because just after they won the big contest, Ricky Nelsons' sons decided they wanted to be rock stars and proceeded to sue the Lubbock boys for the rights to the band name. The battle lasted a couple of years and while The Nelsons ended up retaining their name, by the time all was said and done their national career was over.

During the troubles, lead singer, Donnie Allison, used to joke "We're the Snoslins!"

Donnie died this last May from cancer.

Their one big song, "I Don't Mind":

20. I liked Van Halen with Diamond Dave
and I loved Sammy Hagar when he was a solo artist. When I heard Van Halen was picking up Sammy I thought they had invented the perfect band. I like the Van Hager period, just liked the DLR Van Halen period better.

17. Panic at the Disco
Their first album showed lots of promise. Second was an attempt to imitate the Beatles. Then two of the four members split. They went from a Rolling Stone cover to obscurity very rapidly.

26. !
Their first album was smart and cocky, smarmy sing-alongs with sharp hooks. I was surprised it didn't hit big.

Great debut album...

Two tours, then Holdsworth and Bruford left...

Even adding Terry Bozzio on drums couldn't rekindle the magic.

Their second album had maybe one good tune on it.

23. Second album has a different feel, but is every bit as good as the first to me.
That project was way too short lived.

21. Don't make fun....Depeche Mode.
First album, so fresh, so anti-establishment. Then they decided to go commercial. Well, yeah, it did make them more popular, but at what cost!

25. Disturbed. Papa Roach.
I'll admit I liked their first album but the whole "angry white boy" genre of music got really old really quick.
