Poll question: KILLER sandwiches...do you call them subs, heroes, hoagies, grinders, po boys, or...?

Not referring to the "two slices of white or wheat bread and some stuff" or wraps or pita pockets or any of that type...I'm talking about the MAGNIFICENT French bread wonder,the "submarine sandwich"...what they were called in Massachusetts, where I grew up. What do YOU call them?

1. Hoagie covers it all.

Whatever's in there. Whether it's prosciutto and cheese, meatballs and marinara, or shaved beef, peppers and onions.
Unless it's a shrimp po-boy or a muffaletta.

4. Lived for quite a while in the Philly area -- LOVES me some hoagies...

Sadly, though there are a coupla decent Philly hoagie/cheesesteak transplant
shops here in Tucson now, none of them seem to have this "thick-as-your-wrist"

10. just not from the bloated, over-hyped chains

I know of little-known delis here that put Lees Hoagies to absolute shame

Such as...the Durham Deli, oops, can't find a link, but you could make two nights dinner out of one of those fucking monsters

When I say over-hyped, I really didn't mean to say Lees was, but I was referring to the Pats and Genos crowd ( Jims on South Street has great cheesesteaks in my opinion )

6. I favor the po boy but they're not interchangeable.

Po boys have crusty French bread and never have much other than the meat or seafood, some mayo and juices and lettuce and tomato.

but, in the SW corner of the state, people call them "wedges" Not sure if that carried over the border into Westchester or not, though.

11. my experience with "subs" is that the ingredients have a tendency to stay on the inside

of the sandwich...not much fun there.

It's got to be sloppy and messy, like quick, nasty sex...satisfying, yet you don't mind wearing some of it on your face for a while afterwa.....oops, don't want to get this thread locked, sorry.

Also, I can report from the banh mi capital of the US, San Jose, that although they are served on the same type of bread, they are usually not stuffed nearly as full as their Occidental counterparts.

21. ALMOST every long sandwich is a sub to me

HOWEVER, if it's from a Cajun restaurant and has shrimp or crawdads on it, it's a Po Boy and if it's straight up meatball _I_ always call it "A meatball sandwich and yer phone number" (I stopped drinking Cokes or any carbonated beverage some time ago)

I can tell you that this habit of mine regarding meatball subs is very irritating to my co-workers who have to hear it every time we go to Firehouse or Larry's Giant Subs.

My wife is not very fond of it either.

But that was from one of my all time favorite movies and I can't not do it.
